Ferry Service along the Shannon

Was there ever a ferry service along the Shannon, say, between Limerick City and Shannon Town/Airport? I think such a service would be great, maybe have it go out to UL and onto Castleconnell/Killaloe. Wasn't there a guy running a hovercraft for a while. He had a mooring near Steamboat Quay, think he visited Bunratty, Shannon, Ringmoylan and Foynes.
