Thank you. Your valuable contribution has been noted.

OK I probably shouldn't have phrased it like I did, it's just that certain "American" names just sound....weird over here, where they wouldn't sound so strange in America.

Like when you hear Jayden, you automatically think "Ugh. Britney's kid" It's not that it's a bad name, it just has bad connotations.

    Sorry, it was a rushed post:P and I didn't see Dragan's post on page 2. I don't like the name Jayden really:pac:

    Simon Cowell isn't a nerd, he's a jackass.

All of those top names suck. Imagine what'll be like when they go to school, there will be 5 or 6 kids with the same name. Michelle must have been a popular name in the 80's because there were 3 in my class and 9 in my year. Where's the originality? I'm not talking stoopid makey-uppy names like Twashmeeka or the likes of Tallulah Does the Hula but why choose such plain common names?

Overheard a gas conversation in the chipper tonight.
Met Jacinta the other night. Ya won't believe it. Shes 6 months preggers.
    Who's the father?
    She doesn't know.
    Boy or Girl?
Girl, She wanted to name her sometin ta do with princesses, so she looked up da internet and she decided to name her Tiana. Tia for short.

Needless to say the two participants of the conversation where of a certain socio-economic background

Tiana's not that bad a name - it's short for Christiana which is a a variant of Christian and Christina. Shortening it to Tia is just plain lazy though.

Never liked the name Jacinta - just has all sorts of 'knacker' connotations in my mind for some reason. Not crazy about 'Majella' either.

Totally take your point, Nightwish, about the boring-ness of it all - with so many people having the same name. In our local bar, among the regulars, there could be sitting there (at any one time), 5 Tonys, 4 Micks, 4 Daves, 5 Johns, 3 Shays and 3 Brians. Dunno about Twashmeeka though ;)

I think the best name for a female is Amy

If I have 2 daughters, I will be calling them Amy, and Emma.

    That is all.

There's certain parts of Limerick where every girl that is now between 16 and 18 years old is called either Lyndsey or Stacey. Must have been compulsory in the early nineties.:P

Christiana sounds lovely. Different without being Knacker.

Oh I feel sorry for the Jacintas out there. Funny thing is for some people its a religious name but it sadly got dragged down to knacker level...

Does anyone know someone called Fatima.????? I had always associated it with being catholic and of virgin Mary and sadly being slightly knacker.

Many Irish people don t know that it is also an islamic name as one of the daughters of Mohommed was Fatima. Which is maybe why the place where virgin mary "appeared" is called after Fatima in Portugal. Hence where we got our Fatima name from.

In Dubai I had 3 Fatimas in one class. It made me smile when I associated them with the Fatima mansion and Catholisism. Despite then being devout Muslims.

Still I wouldn t dream of calling my child Fatima or Jacinta.

A lovely name I heard was Talia - Lebanese name! very original.

I don'thave a problem with people not liking names, it is the thinking other people appreciate hearing about that bothers me.

You could argue that point about anything, cars, bands, colours, etc. Somebody is always going to dislike something you like, that's just the way it is, and people are entitled to say whether they like something or not.

For the record, Lena is a nice name, but I'll be nice and not bother you further with my thoughts regarding Blaze. ;)

(Jayden and Freya?!! This is IRELAND ffs....)

Freya is a Nordic name so to be honest we have a more realistic connection to it than Lucas or Jacob, being a northern european name.

Nordic names ftw! My kids will be named after the Viking gods and goddesses!

I really dislike Oliver and Daniel. The worst name in Ireland has to be Oonagh/Una though, man it just makes me think of fat pharmacy assistants for some reason. *shudder*

I actually love the name Michelle, it's one of my favourite girls names.

I don't mind names that are common as long as they're nice. I just think a lot of those top names aren't particularly nice.

I also hate when names have bad connotations. Like if Britney Spears had never become famous, people here might hear the name Britney and think "What a nice, unusual name" instead of thinking "She's either a knacker or a bimbo. Probably both"

Similarly, I love the name Naomi for a girl, but when I hear it I can't help thinking of a certain phone throwing, air steward abusing, mentally insane supermodel. :(

    Something original like:

    Odin (boy)
    Freyja (girl)
    Hrolfr (boy)
    Valkyrie (girl)
    Thor (boy)
    Saga (girl)

No Tom, Mary, Claire, Mick. Wrecks my head in completely. A bit of intuitive thinking is whats needed. Originality. How about Elrond (boy)? or maybe Galadriel (girl) Great names.

I like a little bit of originality, but you have to remember that the children have to grow up with these names. I have an awful name and I've been slagged forever, I've always resented my parents for it

A friend of mine has a mate named Thor. I always assumed it was a nickname when my mate mentioned him, until I actually met the guy. Nice bloke, apparently his parents were of a slightly hippyish demeanor. Can't remember his surname but it's something pretty common like Murphy or Kelly iirc.

Your daughter's name always reminds me of a certain Fleetwood Mac song. It's a nice one though. :)
