    Hi All

I did my Driving test yesterday in SGS swords-I failed-11 GRADE 2 Faults-I am sick. However I was a bit annoyed when the tester told me one of my faults. It concerns the roundabout after the pavillions in Swords{Malahide roundabout I think}The tester asked me to take the Fourth exit{last exit}off the roundabout,So I indicated into the right-hand Lane and took the Fourth exit onto the Dual carridgeway- entering it on the fast lane.He gave me a Grade two fault saying I should have stayed in the left lane all the way around until I reached the 4th exit???I asked my instructor this and he said I did the right thing by going into the right hand lane on my approach to the roundabout evening though I was entering the dualcarriage way in the fast lane.Any feedback would be much appreciated

Standard of driving isn't as high. This is not a way of having a go at drivers here but it is a product of a system that pretty much allowed absolutely anyone to apply for a licence and then get behind the wheel of a car straight away with no lessons and apply for the test. Hopefully this will change.

Thet would have to have passed a theory test and be 17 years of age before being issued with a Learner Permit and then have adequate insurance etc.

Could hardly be described as "anyone"!

Indeed I might know but then again I'm very familiar with many aspects of this subject.

A 16 year old might read your post and take it as read - hence the need for my clarification. :)

Failed in Raheny yesterday. got four faults for not allowing enough clearance to stationary vehicles. What I don't get is that I had two lessons and a pre-test in Raheny and this wasn't mentioned to me at all.
    Anyways applied again.

The Driving test is not impossible to pass. The important thing is to be calm and keep concentrating. An internal running commentary will keep you focused

.ie " Now Im turning left and my wheels should be near the kerb...etc

I failed test one because I was a terrible driver. I failed tests 2 and 3 because of lack of concentration. On Test 3 I asked the guy "Which way?" and he said "follow the road"-I went straight up a road that had a sign "buses only" ! Why? Because I was just blindly following him rather than driving as I normally would. I would normally look ahead to where I was being asked to go. I got confused and thought he meant straight ahead -he obviously meant follow it round!

I finally passed by using the running commentary and looking ahead . I also used positive visualization:)a.

omg...i got the exact same, 4 grade 2's for clearance. Its Raheny! Raheny is small, you cant help being close to parked cars....its really annoying.

I failed today at SGS Clonshaugh.. The theory part was perfect, but when I was driving I got so nervous... I mixed up the handsigns and reversed to the kerb.. well I wasnt too good at checking the mirror either.. finally I got 9 points.. :(
First time for me, and I am going to apply now for the next..

This time I had no problem with observation and not with any manouvers.. but some idiot gone across the roundabout (when I say across I mean he was turning right on the circle "ramp"!!), and nearly crashed my car from the right side when I was simply turning to the left. I am sure that I had the right of way as he wasnt at the roundabout when I drove into it, for this reason I did not check the right side again, because I never thought that someone will make this "shortcut" and not give me the right of way..
My fault was that I did not see the van coming (I got no point for "not" observing!).. so I failed.. again..
Funny that this happened at the second minute of my test, and I had to drive 40 minutes after even I knew I failed..

    3rd time lucky..

got four points for clutch as instructor said I came off it to sharply heart broken.

Is it possible to reapply directly to sgs rather than having to go through the RSA again?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 23,158 ✭✭✭✭Alanstrainor

    Examiner;)
Hard luck, at least you know where you fell down. Unfortunately you will have to apply through the normal channels, ie to an RSA centre, and state in the comments box that such a sgs centre would be preferable. Best of Luck

Failed again in Deansgrange 2 weeks ago. Would have appealed but it's not worth it. Applied again and got a cancellation to do it in a week and a half in Churchtown. 3rd time lucky.

Failed again yesterday in Finglas (2nd time). Found my fail to be pretty unfair and I don't agree with it. Drive went very well otherwise. Will reapply this morning.

That's it, just keep at it. There is a very strong element of 'who you get on the day' as is the case with all human-based decision making.

Just failed in Limerick. My driving instrustor was due to pick me up at 10.00. At 10.15 i call him to see where he is and he sounds hungover and gives me some bull about a problem with his car AND phone. I had to ring around like a maniac to find a guy who would take me.

He arrived at 10.50 for my 11.15 test and was absolutely great, much better than my regular guy but it was a different car and the pedals felt really different. Only got to drive the car for 15 minutes before the test. Nothing major at all, just 1 too many minors! There is a brand new company car sitting downstairs in the carpark that i can't have now for a few more weeks because of this.

I'll be sticking with the new guy.

    Ah nuts!

Absolutely. I believe I deserved to pass in Deansgrange a few weeks ago but the woman was super harsh. Got it again tomorrow!

    hey.
today i had my driving test it was raining very hard before and during my test slow i took the conciencse decision to knock about %10 of my speed, the tester marked me in the blue for this. he laso maeked me for 2 other things, observation while doing the 3 point turn and reversing around the corner.....heres the thing though.. i drove very well and i was shocked when we arrived back when he said i have bad news...yu faile on reaction to hazards.......now at one of the rd-abouts while i was on the roundabout this guy pulled right out in front of me....i asked him...was it because of the roundabout...he said no......puddles are a hazard too.....i remember there being puddles because of the rain but in fairness none of them were so large as to merit driving around them.....in all fairness i drove for 40 minutes with any serious mistakes while being in control of the vechile at all times. 3 blue marks for minor offences one of which was a judgement call...is it just me or dos this seem harsh. granted puddles can be a hazard....but surely the operative words here are "can be" i didnt speed through them. and they had no effect whatsoever on the car.... me thinks the test was just living up to sterotypical tester reputations...no doubt some of you will say he was right....ive also no doubt that does who do will either be testers, related to testers or begrudgers..i welcome your responces...also no quips about my spelling...i never said i was an expert.

    Post moved.
And i dont suppose you could split that into paragraphs, it's very difficult to read with "..." instead of paragraphs.
Also it's very hard for us to know exactly what the situation was that got you the grade 3 mark. (I presume you failed with one grade 3, or red box?)

sorry i though i made it clear..i got one red for not reacting to puddles. i got 3 blue one of which was for not making progress on the straight. like i said none of the puddles i drove through had any effect whatsoever on the car

    Two possible reasons:

    1. The puddles could have had a pot holes in it that was not visible.

    2. You may have splashed pedestrians by driving through them.

Guess I'll add to the self deprecation here and say I'm an absolute pillock, of course when added to a tester who is also one the end result is a rather pathetic failure by just one fault in G2. It took place in Gorey not 2 hours ago an was my fist attempt. Driving a car that I've only had about 3 hours driving about in i suppose isn't too shabby, but that is still no excuse for failure. Completely my fault though it is, one can't help but feel hard done by here. Though i now have to reapply and just keep on truckin' as they say and not let this black mark on my history of State tests get me down but unfortunately it will.

Failed today in Baldoyle, got 2 Grade 2's and a Grade 3 on Grange Roundabout - I use it frequently, but got the Grade 3 for Observation when some plonker in a van went for 3rd exit (Clarehall, I was taking 3rd Exit from Donaghmede heading back towards Baldoyle) in outer lane...I thought he was going 2nd (towards Donaghmede) as he had his indicator on and as I was pulling out he changed his mind so it was a near miss on the brakes. Tester marked me up on it, couldn't help it, suppose I should have waited a few seconds more, but I had missed two opportunities by then and just wanted to get onto the roundabout - was just at the end of the test too :(

But, he was very encouraging back at the test centre, told me I drove very well upto that point and did my reversing and hill start perfectly, and got a grade 1 on 3pt turn. He told me to reapply ASAP and go for it again, said I was a good driver and obviously worked hard for the test, aced all Rules, Checks and got no marks for progress. I always thought they were "you failed" and that's it - but he asked was it my first test (yes), and how long I was driving the car (5 days) and told me to put it down as experience, not to be disheartened, and not to give up as I only failed at the last hurdle...was nearly home and dry

So I'll be applying later on for another test, getting onto instructor for some lessons for Friday/Saturday and I'll be having nightmares about the Grange Roundabout for a week :P
