Ears really itchy after swimming

Hi,
My mum has started swimming alot recently and has started to notice that her ears are really itchy afterwards. It's really annoying. She thinks she must be allergic to something in the water - perhaps it's the chlorine.

She says she saw a child wearing a swimming cap before and the cap either covered her ears completely or the child has something on under the cap to protect her ears.

Anybody know what these ear covers might be called?

Itchy ear can happen if you're ears are too clean - no wax etc....

I am prone to ear infections and use earplugs to keep water out of my ears but also use the Aquasphere Glide cap http://www.cyclesuperstore.ie/shop/pc/viewPrd.asp?idcategory=0&idproduct=11922 which allows the ears to be covered without putting too much pressure on the ears. before getting these hats I use to use two silicone hats one with the top cut off and wore it as a band covering my ears (worked well but looked stupid but stopped me getting bad enough ear infections to suffer from vertigo)

I noticed on the Aquashere site that they have a new cap http://www.aquasphere.it/eng/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=65&Itemid=195 that seems to give even better head coverage.

For swim caps they are expensive (€12) but they last an age. 1st one I got lasted 4 years.
