Theres this stuff you can get in health food shops its cold sore lip balm. Works brilliant. That or cut it.

I get them quite often, and I use an ointment that contains aciclovir/acyclovir, such as Zovirax or just get a cheapo generic one which works just as well. Very effective.

Otherwise I see that Compeed (who make those great thin, transparent, waterproof plasters) have brought out a Cold Sore patch .. look good, and avoids the awkward time after the infection itself has cleared up when you get a small scab forming which keeps getting knocked off. I don't think there's any active ingredient in them though, they just cover them up until they go away of their own accord, so could take a little longer.

EDIT: Just found this http://beaut.ie/blog/?p=4766 .. looks like they aren't quite so good as they seem. Lots of other suggestions here too, albeit from the wimmins's perspective

Oh you're at the scab stage.....whole different ball game now! Nothing ya can do im afraid...not even padres pee will help! If it was the tingly blister stage then maybe you'd have some hope!

Zovirax works so well for me that I don't take the risk of trying anything else. As my husbo and I both carry the dreaded virus we have lots of the tinsy, teeny little tubes scattered around our "drugs drawer"

I have, of course, in the past been caught out and have tried the follwing wives-tales:
Toothpaste - supposed to dry it out, or something. Didn't have much effect.
Vaseline - DON'T put Vaselien on a cold sore, it just softens up your lips and makes them even more sensetive to the blister

I have not tried rubbing a garlic clove over a cold sore which is said to help.

What I always did was...

If its still at the tingle stage, put ice and medi wipes on it!
If its up a little bit, burst it with clean hands and using tissue, took out all the juice, sprayed it with perfume and added sudocream. They always went within like 2-4 days instead of the usual 1-2weeks.
Just keep checking it and making sure it doesn't scab by adding more sudocream.

Thats what works for me anyways. Zovirax is useless in my opinion. Viralief works better.

Good god! Ice,perfume and sudocream...no way! Part of the reason the herpes flares up is if you're run down or are exposed to extremes of temperature too quickly (like getting to much sun or out in freezing weather) so no ice and i deffo wouldnt waste a €60 bottle of perfume on it either!

think ive come to the conclusion that, there is no quick fix for codlsores, u just have to live with them for the week or 2:mad:

Yes! Peeing in the shower apparently keeps athlete's foot away.

I rather like the idea of having an athlete's foot (and the rest of him for that matter) somewhere in the vicinity of me sometimes, but that's just me.

Quite a few people have given you advice here, if you bothered to try any of it your coldsore could be gone in just a few days....
