It is Kingfisher as Casshern88 mentioned. They are currently advertising for staff.

Hope they get staff that know what they're talking about, doubt it though.
As long as the equipment, i.e. big weights, is there, I'll be happy but if its not..........I'm not going to even think about that possibility

This question is probably a bit premature but since Kingfisher have apparently got the contract someone might know. Back when we were asked to vote to increase the Student Levy to help pay for the new gym we were told that students and alumni would get a special rate. Not being a student anymore(:() I'm very interested to see if the promise of a special rate for alumni will be honoured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

Alumni myself, reduced rate will be on offer. Doubt it'll be a big (25%+) discount over the public rate. And if I remember correctly, it's only applicable for the first 2 years after it opens.
The pool is on the right side of Galway for me when I'm home, probably all I'd ever use in there really.

Crunch sent me a message yesterday saying the are closing up on the 8/8/08 and that the new gym is opening on the 18/8/08, which is great news!

And lo,there was much rejoicing and lifting of iron...Don't suppose they said they had a power rack?

Crunch sent the message and Crunch don't have a power rack. ;)

I'll be in galway in the next couple of weeks so I'll try and get a sneak preview of the new place and I'll throw up a list of what equipment they got or will be getting.

I drove passed the new gym this afternoon and it's looking very well. The builders are still in there. Can't wait for it to open!

anyone heard anything else about Crunch? They said they were sending out letters regarding a membership transfer - but I haven't received anything.

(apparently, public memberships are transferred to NRG...)

I got a text from Crunch saying my membership had transferred to the new sports centre as of August 18th (I think).

Apparently, the new gym will open on the 19th August but will not be available to use until a later unspecified date.

i thought you could join as a member from august 18th and i assumed that meant all facilities would be in use?

I'm tryin to decide if i should wait or just join kingfisher, any idea of the prices?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭Cathy

250 euro for students and 395 euro for staff, according to the SU. Not sure of the public rate. Anyone graduating this year gets one year at the student rate, since they paid one year of the levy.

Is there a definate date for when the gym is opening? I drove past it this avo and all the builder's gear is still inside and the fences are still up.

They're running guided tours of the facilites all this week. The rates are
    Staff: €395
    Student €250
Public (up to 1/0/08) €545 after this date €595 + €100 subscription fee
    Family (2 adults + 2 Kids) €1356
You can ring 085 7213813 for further info. It looks good but I couldn't get a definite opening date out of them. Still a lot of work going on there.

only one year at a student rate.. but I paid 3 years of a levy? Isn't that a bit of a joke?

Im just back from the tour of the new gym and on a positive note the facilities are excellent.

It seems however that there is an on going dispute between crunch fitness and nuig which means that, contrary to what crunch have said, you cant just call in and get your membership transferred. They hope to have it sorted very soon though.

Thats not whats annoying me, you have to pay the full years membership to use ANYTHING in the place. Its meant to be a student centre, we have paid for it over the last few years with our fees and we will be paying for it for the next few years. And they still wont take pay-as-you-go like EVERY other college in Ireland?? Its an absolute disgrace, but im sure the students union will make a stand (not).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the 100 euro increase in the student levy only went through last September.

No. The initial increase in the student levy to pay for the new gym was introduced after a referendum back in 2002 or 2003 if I recall correctly. I voted yes in that referendum and paid the levy for four years on the specific representation from Iggy himself that we would be given some sort of discount when the gym opened.

That's a bloody disgrace. I know Kingfisher are running a commercial operation however this complex was first and foremost supposed to be a student centre.

Is it the entire years membership you have to pay up front or can you pay it on a monthly/bi-monthly basis? Is the gym open for business now?

No, according to my tour guide the only option is 1 years full membership. I have no problem paying something, but surely they cant get away with this.

I know the referendum was then, but as far as I know the increase didn't actually go through straight away. If you want to check/complain, the SU president's email is su.president@nuigalway.ie...

The sports centre levy has been there for a few years now.

Any word of the equipment in there?
Did any staff transfer from Crunch?
    Who is the manager?
When can people actually use it?

There is no equipment in yet, it should be there by next week. My guide said he wasnt a gym instructor but that every time someone asks him if a certain piece of equipment would be there, he checked and it was. He said there was over a millions euros worth of equipment coming, which doesnt mean much to me cause I dont know how much gym equipment costs! The gym is very very big though, and everything thats finished looks great.

Theres no crunch people there from what he said. He didnt seem to think much of them. I heard from someone else that the kingfisher manager was going to be in charge of the place till someone else was employed. Im not sure how true that is.

The pool will be open next monday, they hope the gym will be open on wednesday but it depends on when the workmen finish.

Its looking really good i have to say, im just annoyed that I wont be able to use it!!

What about renting the hall? Surely you wouldn't need to pay a membership fee to rent the hall for an hour?

I'm pretty sure the levy was introduced in 2005 and is supposed to continue for up to 18 years!

    Thanks megs3 for the information.

    But does it have:
That the Sports Centre will comprise of, inter alia, a substantial gym, an indoor heated 25 metre swimming pool, indoor squash courts, indoor racquetball/handball courts, indoor arena, outdoor tennis courts, indoor running track, refreshment area, changing rooms and showering and toilet facilities, lockers, health spa, sauna, meeting facilities..
