Does anyone know when the new gym complex will be opened? Was walking past it today and there seems to be a fair bit of work left to do.

It was scheduled to be opened "in the spring".

I've also heard Iggy wants to open it before he goes (mid-March) I think.

Me I'd say it'll be only properly finished about May

I know its exciting but it hardly warrants two threads!:) It's due to open in April

Ha, yea two threads...I'm really excited about the new gym!

When I was in first year we were asked to vote to raise the student levy by about 100 bucks in order to pay for the new gym and were promised that if we did it would be open by the time we were in third year - that was five years ago!!

Cant believe Iggy is going too, what a hero wont be the same without him, many a good rag week we had with him messing down around the college bar.

I did the same in my last college. Paid for a gym that opened when I left only to go to NUIG and I'm due to leave in the next few months here.

Anyone still knocking around the campus? Just wondering how our new sports center is looking, surely it has to be nearly finished, if not already.

last time i was around there, about a week or so, it didn't look close to being usable on the inside. externally it's pretty finished though.

It was like that when I left, in March! Wonder will they even get it open for the start of September, at this rate I wouldn't be too hopeful, thanks for the update

In fairness they've done alot of groundwork, kerbing, tarmacing that doesn't seem like a lot but is time consuming enough. The outside looks pretty much ready to go. Can't comment on the inside. October is the new date being mentioned

What are gyms facilities like in NUIG at the minute?

Pretty crap, well it depends what your after I suppose, if your joining the gym for cardio and light weights then its fine, but there is no proper bench or squat rack, just a smith machine and dumbells as far as 30kg. It has a decent amount of machines and its resonably cheap too, but we are all waiting for our new state of the art gym.* fingers crossed*

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

And is there a decent gym in the city that's cheapish?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 401 ✭✭sharkDawg

I take it your talking weights then? Galway city gym is the best, not sure on prices, its located just outside the city and as I don't have a car...
Have a look at this thread

I'm more interested in the swimming pool.

Cheers, the city gym sounds good if the uni one doesn't open. I suppose it will depend on where I'm living to an extent. I just need a power rack.

Quick question...... is the Gym your talking about the 'Crunch' gym? I might be heading up to NUIG for Sept, is that one anygood for students in the college?

In NUIG there is a new sports complex built, swimming pool, gym, climbing wall, sports halls etc but it is not yet furbished and is due to open in september/october, this is whats been talked about. At this moment in time the only gym in college is Crunch which is fine for your average "want to get fit" student.

  • Users Awaiting Email Confirmation Posts: 128 ✭✭MuchSavage

Due to the minor gym facilities in DIT, I've been a member of the other Gyms around during college. Have finished up and will prob be heading to do another additional course in NUIG, just wondering as regards the standard of it, i have heard some mixed reports about it

this new gym is a joke, Crunch is a joke, have you ever seen the ads and leaflets which have pics of a gym which clearly isnt crunch. really pissed of now, i though august wud be the latest id have to wait, by the way kingfisher will be running it, or so i have heard

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,165 ✭✭✭✭brianthebard

Is kingfishers involvement a good or bad thing?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 703 ✭✭✭jayoo

well i think it might be ok. at the moment crunch has the worst gym instructors alive, dont get me wrong they are nice guys, very friendly, and very fit, however there is only one ginger guy who looks as if he has ever picked up a dumbell. it doesnt fill me with confidence wen i see an instructer benching 10kg dumbells on an excercise ball.

i just want a gym which has lots of free weights, lots of benches, 6 or 7 power racks, thats all, so basccially a big shead with the above would be ideal,

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 703 ✭✭✭jayoo

last few times i have gone to salthill, they have one power rack and lucky enough no one ever uses it. it must be said that i went durin the day.

As a student here 4 years I've been to Crunch the first (worst gym in Galway), Kingfisher for second year (decent enough) and now Salthill for 2 years. Salthill is the best.
There is no sales bull****, its cheap enough and they have adequate weights. In my opinion its not a gym unless you have at least one power rack and bench press. Lots of gyms in Galway don't.

my thoughts exactly.I miss nuim's gym,it had a tiny weights room but it was good! And there were a dozen or more 20kg plates.Sligo has no proper gym.

I could be corrected on this but I think it might be difficult for gyms to get insurance for free/loose weights. I have heard that before, but not from anywhere reputable. As far as I can tell, a lot of new gyms (in particular) have their hands tied if they open doors to the general public.

I can't wait to see the new gym. I'm not very impressed by Crunch, but then it suits a lot of the people who want to run on a treadmill and use the rowing machine. Isn't there a proper weights room up at Dangan? There used to be an dingey, old-fashioned one (think Rocky films) behind that national school building above the track. Did they move that down to the pavilion when it opened?

Is that gym pay as you go?? if so whats the fee per use?

kingfisher do have the contract for the new gym, i know several people who work in the current sports center and they have conformed this, Also i was talking to one of the current workers there who apparently has seen the blueprints for the new gym and power racks/ Olympic bars are included apparently....although i wont take that as gospel or anything.

Its only right that they should have decent equipment .ive seen the gym on campus in DCU and its more akin to galway city gym than to crunch hopefully they do a proper job with it this time round.

Ive heard about that weight room up in dangen ive heard its half decent weights wise, wouldnt mind sneakin in there for a look sometime.

was 8 euro in salthill but that was with student card, i think ten euro normally, get to use sauna afterwards which is cool. i hope they hurry up with the new gym

It is Kingfisher as Casshern88 mentioned. They are currently advertising for staff.

Hope they get staff that know what they're talking about, doubt it though.
As long as the equipment, i.e. big weights, is there, I'll be happy but if its not..........I'm not going to even think about that possibility

This question is probably a bit premature but since Kingfisher have apparently got the contract someone might know. Back when we were asked to vote to increase the Student Levy to help pay for the new gym we were told that students and alumni would get a special rate. Not being a student anymore(:() I'm very interested to see if the promise of a special rate for alumni will be honoured?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 15,817 ✭✭✭✭po0k

Alumni myself, reduced rate will be on offer. Doubt it'll be a big (25%+) discount over the public rate. And if I remember correctly, it's only applicable for the first 2 years after it opens.
The pool is on the right side of Galway for me when I'm home, probably all I'd ever use in there really.

Crunch sent me a message yesterday saying the are closing up on the 8/8/08 and that the new gym is opening on the 18/8/08, which is great news!

Crunch sent the message and Crunch don't have a power rack. ;)

I'll be in galway in the next couple of weeks so I'll try and get a sneak preview of the new place and I'll throw up a list of what equipment they got or will be getting.

I drove passed the new gym this afternoon and it's looking very well. The builders are still in there. Can't wait for it to open!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,215 ✭✭✭galah

anyone heard anything else about Crunch? They said they were sending out letters regarding a membership transfer - but I haven't received anything.

(apparently, public memberships are transferred to NRG...)

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20 TrialVersion

I got a text from Crunch saying my membership had transferred to the new sports centre as of August 18th (I think).

Apparently, the new gym will open on the 19th August but will not be available to use until a later unspecified date.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 49 sarahbrennan

i thought you could join as a member from august 18th and i assumed that meant all facilities would be in use?

I'm tryin to decide if i should wait or just join kingfisher, any idea of the prices?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 593 ✭✭✭Cathy

250 euro for students and 395 euro for staff, according to the SU. Not sure of the public rate. Anyone graduating this year gets one year at the student rate, since they paid one year of the levy.

Is there a definate date for when the gym is opening? I drove past it this avo and all the builder's gear is still inside and the fences are still up.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 6,466 ✭✭✭Lumi

They're running guided tours of the facilites all this week. The rates are
    Staff: €395
    Student €250
Public (up to 1/0/08) €545 after this date €595 + €100 subscription fee
    Family (2 adults + 2 Kids) €1356
You can ring 085 7213813 for further info. It looks good but I couldn't get a definite opening date out of them. Still a lot of work going on there.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,675 ✭✭✭ronnie3585

Do you know if there will be a special rate for alumni?

250 for school year? sounds really reasonable if this is a good gym,

i'll have to ask her, but i think my sisters gym is free in cork tho, dunno if thats sure tho, someone can clarify

only one year at a student rate.. but I paid 3 years of a levy? Isn't that a bit of a joke?

Im just back from the tour of the new gym and on a positive note the facilities are excellent.

It seems however that there is an on going dispute between crunch fitness and nuig which means that, contrary to what crunch have said, you cant just call in and get your membership transferred. They hope to have it sorted very soon though.

Thats not whats annoying me, you have to pay the full years membership to use ANYTHING in the place. Its meant to be a student centre, we have paid for it over the last few years with our fees and we will be paying for it for the next few years. And they still wont take pay-as-you-go like EVERY other college in Ireland?? Its an absolute disgrace, but im sure the students union will make a stand (not).
