Washing Machine that uses hot water from cylinder

    Does anyone have a washing machine that uses hot water from a cylinder?

    Our current machine uses just a cold feed, but just recently we installed a 60 tube/300l tank solar water heating system. So we have lots of hot water for free. So I'm wondering if change machine to a hot water fed machine, we'd save on energy costs for the machine to heat cold water.

    What do you think?

    how much did the solar setup cost, lol


    washing machines try to insist on heating up cold water that way the temperature is exactly the one by the one required.

    but most have a speed wash cycle that uses the mains hot water, but its a very basic wash

    ah yeah it cost, a nice bit, but it's money spent now and it will pay off after a while. A good while I might add. But what a luxury...."free" hot water. I love it.

    Anyway, thanks for the reply. I wonder does my current washing machine take a hot water feed.

    you might have a job actually finding a hot and cold fill machine. most machines these days are cold fill only as believe it or not they are actually more energy effecient :)

    Depends how you are heating the water.
    If you are using the immersion or a oil/gas boiler then cold fill probably makes sense.
    If you are using solar then hot fill is definately the way to go.

    It also depends on pipe distance between machine and tank, as newer machines use much less water than years ago. It is argued that in many cases, by the time the hot water gets from tank to the machine, it's nearly had enough water and has only used the cold water that was in the pipes.

    My old washing machine had a hot water intake pipe, but the new one only has a cold water intake. My old one was a Zanussi and it only took water from the hot water feed if the wash program was 60C or higher - any lower and it used cold water.

    As byte posted above, if the washing machine is economical with water consumption then you may end up getting little if any hot water into the machine unless the machine is close to the hot water cylinder.

    I'm not sure where mine gets her water. Its probably direct from the hot tap.
