An articulate working class Dubliner who went to Spain and learnt how to pluck a classical guitar in the 1950's. A part of Dublin passed away today. I've had watery eyes all evening.

    meh!

mate of mine(banjo player) was on the rip mid eighties in germany with barney mckenna when ronnie bulled into the pub to give out to barney for missing out on the soundcheck.. barney explained that everything was cool that he was having a few practise tunes with a fellow banjo player from cavan and ronnie retorted with "id say hes some banjo player alright.." to which my mate responded with "at least i didnt record "a welia welia walia.. ya ****"...

ah it doesnt really mean that much to non-dubliners tbh!! now luke kelly was a different kettle of fish!

My 4-year-old has just asked me who this "Ronnie Drew man" was so we're sitting here listening to the Youtube tunes everyone has posted. He thinks his beard is class and likes his "sore throat" voice. :D

RIP Ronnie. Music for every generation.

I'd say Ronnie would want his passing to be remembered as follows:

"As I woke up in Heaven, as drunk as drunk could be ....."

Not for the alcohol aspect of it, but for the humour.

The passing of Ronnie Drew marks a semi-official end to The Dubliners who spearheaded an Irish folk music revival and which have made them household names for several Irish generations.

With the passing of Ronnie another part of Irelands history and culture also passes. He has left us with a hole that can't be filled. His voice will echo in every pub for weeks. RIP.
