Sorry if this was posted already and I missed it. I'm not even surprised. Americas answer to absolutely everything: More Guns. It's only a small district but in the land of creationism and scientology it has serious potential to take off.
Maybe the kids should carry too, y'know, 'in case'?

If they are stupid enough to bring guns to a school then let me blow eachothers heads off. A country that creates and maintains its own gun culture deserves what it gets imo.

Haha i have a wonderful image of a child with a gun to its head because it cant remember all 52 states! lol

Teacher : What year was the state founded
Student : I dont know miss
Teacher : (Puts gun to the kids head) Answer to mother ****ing question you punk ass **** or ill slot your brains all over your Ann and Barry book.

    Motivated Learning FTW

When kids are carrying their Gat's to class its only reasonable to allow teachers to pack some heat.

That just escalates the problem. The solution is in reducing the amount of firearms, not increasing them. That'll never happen in America though.

jesus, you anti gun-nuts are as useless as the anti-drug nuts. you're just never going to be happy until you control what everybody is allowed to do with their own lives.

Far, Far more people die as a result of car accidents than gun crime but of course all you scumbag car users are willing to make exceptions for that. Don't you know that petrol fuels terrorism?
Someone should lock you all up so the rest of us can get on being decent citizens without your polluting, terrorist funding, dangerous driving asses making life hell for the rest of us.

jesus, you anti gun-nuts mindless rant rant rant..

Lol I wasn't actually saying that was going to happen, just explaining to sendic how he totally missed the point Grimes was making, who was just making a joke tbh.

Still though, its pretty retarded imo.

Their solution to gun problems is, *shock horror* MORE GUNS

    sigh, silly americans :p

that's because the problem isn't guns, the problem is crazy ****ers shooting up schools. And the only way to protect against a crazy ****er with a gun, is a sane ****er with a gun. harping on about how guns are evil isn't going to solve anything and is only going to make things easier for the criminals, who *shock horror* tend not to obey gun laws to begin with.

I realise the point Grimes was TRYING to make, my issue is with the broad, sweeping, Americans are stupid comment. If I was trying to make a humorous comment about another nations perceived stupidity, I would make sure my comment was factually accurate. Unless his comment was intended ironically, but from the tone I'm guessing not.

Does America have gun control issues? Yes.
    Are all Americans stupid? No.
Am I being a little too pedantic? Meh.

Recent school shootings in the United States have prompted some calls for school officials to allow students and teachers to carry legally concealed weapons into classrooms.

Calls to allow students to carry concealed guns?? This is to help with school shootings? I think America-bashing is fully justified in this case.

well then it's a good thing you're not in a position of power, because you're completely misreading the situation.

I think you're misreading my post. The quote comes directly from the article.
I am merely saying that America bashing is justified if there are Americans who believe bringing concealed weapons into schools will stem gun violence

after a quick google i have found that around 40,000 people die in the USA as a cause of vehicle related accidents. and around 30,000 people die regarding gun accidents.

    source for vehicle deaths http://www.car-accidents.com/pages/stats.html

    source for gun deaths http://www.gun-control-network.org/GF01.htm
In 1999, there were 28,874 gun-related deaths in the United States - over 80 deaths every day. (Source: Hoyert DL, Arias E, Smith BL, Murphy SL, Kochanek, KD. Deaths: Final Data for 1999. National Vital Statistics Reports. 2001;49 (8).)

just over 40,000 and just under 30,000. i dont think you can justify the statement "far far more people".

edit: just thought id add in ireland stats.
on average 43.65 people were killed in gun related deaths in ireland in the last few years compared to 2004's figure of 379 vehicle related deaths.
in this situation you could say "far far more people died......."

Try making it more difficult for crazy ****ers to get their hands on guns, not dole them out to everyone like they're freakin skittles. The figures speak for themselves. America has the highest rate of gun crime in the world. Look at the Irish and American figures BrokenArrows just posted. Yes there is some gun crime in Ireland but firearm culture isn't rampant and you can't just go buy a semi-automatic because your fingers feeling itchy and whats that smell? More guns just exasterbates the situation. I'm sure some people will say that they wouldn't feel safe without a gun because their teacher is armed. Guns aren't evil. They are tools. Deadly tools specifically made to take life. They are not a good thing for anyone to be bringing to class.

Don't the cops have to have serious psychological testing before they can carry a firearm? Do the teachers have to do this too?

I mean whats to stop a teacher from pulling out that gun and going on a killing spree?

To be fair in many instances were High Schools have been victims of gun users, the person who is shooting the place up is not the owner. They manage to get their hands on their fathers gun, or their brother's gun.

On the note of the actual thread, I think the reality of the situation is that High Schools are always going to be weak to any potential attack. Plus, the article says the teachers must be licensed holders already so I'm sure they have some level of responsibility about them and that they must possess a sound mind to hold a license. I don't think it's a big deal to allow the teachers to have guns, because a non-leathal shot of some crazy shooting up the place could save countless lives.

I read about this in the guardian today, its ridiculous.

but america (and all its inhabitants) have a varying degree of insanity in their everyday life, but what was weird about the article was that it had a picture of that Korean fellow who shot some students at his university last year.

and the picture was of him, holding a gun, staring towards the camera.

how in the hell did they get that shot?
