can your phone number be ported straight from BT to ntl ?

i'm going to get rid of my BT broadband soon and then get rid of the phone line when UPC have there phone service available in my area but i need to know can i just do a direct port from BT to UPC or do i have to go BT / Eircom and then UPC to keep my home phone number ?.
