Stoopid ads

There's already a thread for this in "Television" but this isn't just for TV ads. In this glorious year of two thousand and eight there are ads all over the place and for just about anything you could shake a proverbial stick at.

So, let's moan about them. I'll go first, for no reason.

The ad on the side of some Dublin Bus buses for Dublin Bus. Has anyone else seen this? It's yellow with the following writing

" | The Bus _ Have You Got It Yet?"

I have to admit, the first two times I saw this ad I thought it was saying "I The Bus _ Have You Got It Yet?" and I stood there thinking "No, I don't get it! I the bus?"

Was that their plan all along? To confuse me so that I would think about it and decide "Feck it, I'll have a go on the bus."

Also, Bank of Irelands recent campaign of using monsters to promote their "services". Sure, do we not already know that banks are big scary monsters as it is?

Or Permanent TSB and their pinstripe-suit-wearing "gangster". WTF is that all about? Are they trying to subliminally tell us that bankers are gangsters? Dear deity, what else is new?

I hate the "Never mind the phone book, heres 11850" poster that rips off the Sex pistols album cover of a similar name.
    And all other advertising.
    Bill Hicks was right.

If you think it is bad in Ireland, you should come over here to the US!

That bloody for Cadbury's (with "Don't Stop Me Now" by Queen) really does my head in. What the hell has a bunch of trucks racing around got to do with a bar of chocolate?? I absolutely HATE it!!!!!!!!!!!! *takes deep breath*

The Harvey Norman ads have ensured that I never spend any money in a Harvey Norman store, ever.

The funniest ad I've seen recently was the massive Heineken ad that is Rage Against The Machine's live show. Fcuk you I won't drink what you tell me indeed...

Oooh is that the one with the really annoyingly catchy jingle: "Go Harvey, Go Harvey, go go go go Harvey, GO!" Lol...It irritates me but I still sing along with it sometimes!

That ****ing Budweiser ad pisses me off. The one when your man is dragging stuff everywhere. That Fosters one is **** too.

Well meteor failed again with their new ad.
They really need to find an ad person who is actually funny and not one who thinks he is hilarious and knows what everyone else will find funny.

the knorr vie ad makes me want to throw the tv out the window, and that one where the woman is wandering around super value with the 'six friends over for dinner, yikes!' bit, grrrr so dumb

Ads that annoy me are ones for cars - for the most part you've the car and a mountainy road. Yawn.

Any ads for tampons or STs - in fairness who wants to be told to have a happy period when they're eating their dinner or whatever.

Also hate the chewing gum ads where there is a person dressed in white who fights plaque - it just really grates on my nerves.

I'd say there are loads more than I can't think of of the top of my head. Will be at later watching TV going - hate that one and that one etc.

the ad on radio for the irish times (could be independant) with a fella going on about how up to date/fast their website is, whilst choking on a bun/roll/piece of bread!!!

i want to kill that man

Don't know if this comes under the heading of ads but in the run up to Lisbon the posters with Eamon Gilmore counting off his fingers - he just looked so stupid and posed.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,370 ✭✭✭GAAman

    Two for me,

The tv license ad a few years back where the guy cant take his ma out shopping as he has to go to court over not having a tv license, and his ma takes his dinner off him

"Oh noes i better get a license or me mammy wont give me dinner!!!"

Next one is a bit more recent, anyone see the new one to discourage people from downloading "knock off nigel"?

"Oh noes i better not download stuff or else people in 70's type gear might sing at me" (in a thinly veiled knock off of anchorman how ironic)

What about that Gaviscon ad with the policewoman directing traffic....

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 10,808 ✭✭✭✭chin_grin

What grinds my gears is ads that have NOTHING to do with the product.

McDonalds Eurosaver, the sh!tty 80's ads......something along the lines of "you wouldn't get away with this in the 80's"......sounds wrong, but you've seen them.

The ad for milk with the girl in pink hair. Makes absolutely no sense. Will drinking milk make my hair and lips go neon-pink? What?

And, it was mentioned before the "don't stop me now" cadbury's ad. Just f*cking stupid.

Speaking of 11850, their posters in the airport completely rip off the 118 118 Uk directory enquiries ads, with two guys running with fake moustaches.

It's one of the most blatent rip offs I've ever seen.

It doesn't even make sense either, the point of 118 118's ads were that they each looked the same and had "118" written on their jerseys. This one has "118" on one of their jerseys and "50" on the other.

It's so stupid, and I'd imagine 11811 benefited more from the UK ones, seeing as that's what you'd get when you dial 118 118.
