Newsnight Review discussing 'The Wire' - BBC2 now

    As the title says, Newsnight review are going to be discussing 'The Wire' in a few minutes, asking if it's the best show ever made. I can save them the trouble on that one: yes, yes it is.

    I don't know the panel myself, but the girl on the team presented the piece saying how epic it was, and how it never insulted the intelligence of the audience. She pointed out how many other shows will repeat important items over and over, even the lauded ones, but that 'The Wire' never did. She also brought up how it didn't succumb to the need for redemption that many other shows fell for.

    When it returned to the panel, all three were fans, particularly of how it wove in large themes across a city. A favourite comparison was with Dickens and how his stories interwove different characters in different jobs. They also made favourable nods to Zola and some other writer that I can't recall.

    No disagreement here - everyone loved it to bits. And rightly so.
