I cannot stand Alyss!! He drives me insane when he goes off on one about how it was back in the day and blah blah blah!! I love the bbc coverage though just for the no ads perk!!

We are so used to Sky & Setanta doing the professional stuff, and the american bull**** commentary, but just those couple of times a year you get Alliss, and it's different, and he's a LEGEND!:D

Look at the poll results, most people agree!

Personally I'm tired of him, but he's not the worst of BBC, that's the ignorant twins Mark James and Sam Torrance. I do like Ken Brown, he's just about odd enough to be likeable, and Wayne Grady is about the best of them (but then he's not on BBC anymore is he?).

See here http://principalsnose.blogspot.com/2008/07/open-principal-returns-to-classroom.html for a "good" review of the beeb's coverage and pundits ;)

    Legend.

The Beeb coverage is brilliant, all the commentators are excellent, a good mix. Sunday afternoon is the best, lying in the couch after the dinner listening to Peter.
The relaxing style of their coverage is something to look forward to especially when there's no adds.

I'm even getting to like Gary Lineker a bit

He is just too British for my liking. Not as irritating as Greg Allen. Now there's a pain.........it's golf Greg and you don't have to shout at us and it's not the most important event in the world.

When I look at it on the basis of him ever being there or not then absolutely yes. I think his meanderings are more a reflection of embarrassment on himself:D and entertaining. So give it up for the auld codger:D

The guy annoys the hell out of me - represents a patronizing conceited attitude that represents the stuffiness of golf to a lot of people. Put him out to seed (or out of his misery....)

    Andrew Cotter?

Yeah I couldn't stand him but he grew on me somewhat during the Open. He's a bit of a jack of all trades, does the rugby and thought I heard him commentating at Wimbledon this year too.

I love Peter Alliss, even if he's becoming senile...

Never ever liked him as I said in my earlier post in this thread from last year, but the old fart is just getting worse. I think the problem is he thinks hes a legend.

I stopped listening after this gem as it just shows how he hates all things modern and is forever stuck in the past...
"The weather is pretty bad this year. It's not the worst I ever seen play occur in but its still bad. The wind is blowing hard but not as much as the old days. The wind blew much harder in the old days."

And he was deadly serious! Give me patience! Its not bad enough hes commenting on modern balls and clubs, hes now saying the weather is different too!

I think Grady is usually all right but he was very biased towards Norman i thought. Mark James I found pulls no punches at least. Ken Brown is really the only one i pay any attention to and even at that hes pretty light. That Cotter dudes accent is too strong for my liking.

    I love the guy. He's a hero.
Love listening to his commentary. So much better than the robots who do some of the American competitions...

the beeb's coverage is okay but they have that plod lineker as their anchor and he's rubbish!

He's a legend regardless of his golfing commentary.

Heaviest baby in Europe upon his birth in 1932, FACT.

old thread but no point in creating a new one.

I have to say, I was a huge fan of Peter.
Right up until the Scottish open.

Did anyone find him extremely sarcastic and somewhat disinterested in the commentary. I found it painful to listen to in the end which I found very surprising. Hope it's a different story in a few days time !!

It's all about his voice. For some that is enough. The content is shockingly poor, and increasingly so. Up to a few years ago he was getting away with it, but more recently it has become painfully obvious that he adds nothing. He rambles on, talking sh1te a lot of the time, loads of mistakes, no real insight into any of the players, or anything specific about the game. I really dont think he has anything of substance to offer.

I find him incredibly tough going!

It's a hard gig, the uninterrupted coverage must be a pain.
It has to be so much easier for Sky etc commentators when they get a few mins during the adverts to compose themselves, the break also leads to a few minutes of recapping on what people have missed, thus its an additional time filler that helps those commentators.

My biggest gripe at the BBC coverage is that there was nothing but Molinari/the leaders all weekend. Very little coverage of the rest of the field at all. Guys that were making a charge rarely got covered.

*I may be slightly biased, I had a few e/w bets on lads that we making moves, never seemed to get sight of the at all (maybe just not enough)

Do they cover less of the field or was it just me?

He was rambling on yesterday (Scottish Open) and mentioned in a very disinterested tone that Mickelson had won 'a couple of majors' - eh, make that four Peter. He then informed us that Phil had recently been inducted into the Golfing Hall of Fame, a pretty blatant and transparent attempt to get his co-commentator to dive in and say 'but Peter, weren't you inducted at the same event?'. Instead there was an embarrassing period of silence!

    * Cut's to Shane Lowry about to hit an approach *

    "And here's Wayne Lowry"

Andrew Cotter is Aliss' heir-apparant but we all know the BBC is great because of Ken Brown who possesses a thorough insight of the game.

Allis is too old and should have been retired years ago, BBC have gone way downhill in general on all their sports presentation, and I don't like that Gary Linekar, keep him away from Golf coverage. And that Sam Torrance, the most boring voice on TV. Get rid. Golf presentation is something SKY do alot better than BBC now, they lost their charm years ago....around the time they introduced that Linekar prat.
