I was all geared up for 1.87 Mhz of lightning speed (vs. 999 I currently have) and was quite shocked to find performance about the same as old presario desktop. what is this all about???? This can't all be down to Vista can it?

What are you doing with the laptop? If it's just email and web browsing then you won't notice much of a difference. Do something more cpu intensive and you'll start to notice a difference.
