You are the first person ever who said that to me. You really opened my eyes. Thanks.

No I’m not trying to stop people smoking.

I’m trying to convince the status quo that we need to deprive smokers of oxygen....that way they will not squander the clean air the rest of us need to write sarcastic rants ;)

prendy - you could collect the butts and put them in his bed?

Why is it when smokers get together in neighbours yards they will flick their butts into the next door neighbours yard? Happens frequently to my 83 year old grandmother who lives alone. Last time it happened she cleaned them up and flung them back over. I have seen it happen to other people too.

They do not even have to put them on their mates ground.. there are sure to be bins in the house ffs.

From the tone of prendy's post: "disgusting f**ker", I would wage they are probably past the "lets talk it out" phase.

Plus, why would someone need to be told not to throw litter on the ground? There are advertising campaigns a plenty to ensure only the most ignorant and stupid continue to litter.

Its legal to sh1t in the street? I heard a silly argument that if you knock on 3 homes and ask to use the loo, and they refuse you.....its perfectly legal to take a dump on the street. I don't believe it one bit tho!

You are right, throwing a cigarette butt on the street is exactly the same as ****ting on the street.

Ok, I see you are not looking for a fight really, so I'll stop being sarcastic.

it's not really ok to throw butts on the ground. It's certainly not ok to flick them to other people's gardens. 99% of the time I wouldn't do it - but sometimes it's very very hard not to.

My point is - this is no different than any other rubbish, so I don't see why pick up specifically on the smokers - it's hard enough to be one as it is.

Why don't you ask why is it ok to spit a gum out on the street for example- just look at the pavements in City Centre and you will see how often people do this. It costs enormous amounts of money to clean up, it ruins peoples shoes, and it's as disgusting as cigarette butts.

It is, reason being that holding it for too long can cause serious medical problems. It's different with urinating, because your bladder will just let go before anything serious happens to you.

You don't have to knock on any doors. Also, if you really need to take a pee, but squat down like you're taking a dump, you can't be done for indecent exposure (if you're a guy). Afaik - I haven't tested that aspect!

Guilty of the fag butt on the ground sometimes. :(

But when I'm skiing I normally keep the butts in the small pocket at the bottom of my skipants.

I usually look for a bin in Dublin, but it is too easily to be thoughtless.

    Thanks for reminding me OP

Anytime my brother used to see the driver in front of him throwing a butt out of the window at traffic lights, he would hop out, retrieve the butt and throw it back in on the driver's lap. I agree with his approach in principle, though I'm afraid he'll get shot or stabbed when he encounters a coked-up drug dealer.

The principle is correct - to make sure that smokers know that this is socially unacceptable (as well as illegal). You just gotta confront people when this happens - it's the only only way to wipe it out. There was an office building near me where the smokers would congregate on the public path and leave a disgusting layer of butts on the path, while keeping their own car park clean. Through a combination of complaints to the local litter warden and contact with the management of the building and the directors of the tenants, I got this sorted over a few weeks.

Smokers have the option of carrying a portable ashtray, but I guess it's easier to let someone else clean up after them. The Sunday Business Post reports that they take more than 10 years to biodegrade. http://archives.tcm.ie/businesspost/2006/01/01/story10662.asp

Littering is disgusting full stop and it's suprising in these days that throwing away cigarette butts is socially acceptable. Isn't chewing gum banned in singapore? Perhaps we should consider doing the same here. I can imagine an outrage at such a proposal but if we aren't grown-up and responsible enough to dispose of these things properly then we don't deserve the privilage.

Having been in a few different european countries the people seem to have more respect for their surroundings and dispose of litter appropriately. I don't know why we can't do the same.

And my point was - A drunk guy threw a bag of rubbish on the train tracks, and a guy beside me shook his head in disgust as he flicked his butt onto the track?!? I just don't understand it, its like butts are not being seen as rubbish? Its not an attack on smokers, as obviously not everyone throws their buts on the ground (unless there is a bus coming).

A chewing gum tax was proposed, around 5c for each pack afaik.
But the US companies have fantastic lobbying teams in Ireland and it was quietly dropped

Recently (6 months) I've stopped throwing butts on the ground. If there's not one near, I hold in hand until I find one or stick it in a pocket.

It's not for everyone and I certainly didn't give a damn beforehand, but the non-sense of the whole thing struck me - "you make a point not to litter, but don't bat an eyelid when it comes to cigarette butts? What are you like?"

    Makes me smoke less too!

    That was one guy.

It's like with all the rubish - it's definitely not a cool thing to do, but if you are telling me that you've never dropped a piece of paper when you shouldn;t have, then I just don't believe you.

Sure it makes no odds! It's not about what we've done or not done, it's about what we do when we leave the house today, and from now on :)

It's not just Ireland that has a problem with litter!!

    BBC News

Also, having been to a number of European cities and countries I can safely say that there are litter and grafitti problems there too. Berlin is terrible as is the south of Italy. In many other European countries we simply notice the litter less because they employ more people to pick up litter than we do here. Sad but true.

EDIT: By 'here' I mean Ireland, I sometimes forget that I'm living in England *sigh*
