    Hi,

Anyone do the lotto in the bookies ?
I've started picking 4 numbers, 3000/1. Damn it, I've got 3 numbers three times in a row (I know, I should really start picking 3 numbers at 300/1)

Anyone made any nice cash from it ?

do all bookies give them odds?

yeah, they look good at first, when you consider that 3 numbers in the lotto pays feck all.
but the bookie has a decent edge its not a way to make money, but rather for fun.

I do the 3 numbers from 7, 310/1 in my local. Keep getting 2/3 ... pain in the rear. Same 3 numbers.

I have being doing the 3 number irish lotto draw in bookies for a few years now and adding up total of wins i have had with this method of £1 on 3 numbers = £600 pay out , my winnings runs in about £5,or 6000 . My friend also does same 3 number game and has had roughly same sucess as me . I keep to the same 3 selctions ,of 3 different numbers, in all 3 draws .

Anyone want to post up the real odds of guessing 3 out of 3 correctly, ir 4 out of 4. I mean we all know it is a bad bet to make since it is pure maths and the bookmakers are obviously giving bad odds, but just how bad are they compared to the real odds? I'm guessing pretty bad but I couldn't be bothered working it out as it takes a bit of time to do it correctly.

    3 from 7 from 45 = 404/1

    4 from 7 from 45 = 4256/1

You have to be a real sap to do these kind of bets.

yeah, I've tried this too... picked 10 random numbers 1e on each and none of them came up. feck that I thought and went back to tennis :)

Lady luck will play a large part in any lotto winnings and if you believe your 3 numbers are going to come up even once, chance are they will .

Either you are lying, or made a mistake, the no bookies in the country pay you 600/1 for 3 numbers in the irish lotto

He obvioulsy means pick 3 numbers only. You have to match all 3. Its not like the lotto where you get to pick 6 numbers on each line.

Correct .We are not talking about picking 3 numbers from a national lotto ticket ,were picking 3 from 6 or 7 nimbers on the william hills or ladbrokes odds .You pick 3 numbers from 47 ,they come up on any of the 3 draws or as you say in ireland lotto plus 1 ,2 then bookies pays out 600/1 .The sum of my winnings mentoned was won over a ten year period which works out at roughly £500 a year .

as somone who works in a bookies i can tell you that numbers bets (lotto, 49's and rapido) are highly lucrative for bookies with an 18-20% margin, roughly double that of horse racing. the likes of 49's and rapido are just there to screw the customers while there is no live racing on. if you are genuinely trying to make a profit from gambling the maths clearly states that numbers are the worst avenue to go down.

The more numbers you do the worse the odds get as Crumbs stated earlier you should get €404 for 3 numbers from 7 instead of €300. Over €100 less!. Picking 1 number is the "nearest to true odds" option you have when doing the lotto in the bookies.

I see one firm are offering 3 for the price of 2 Irish lotto draws for the month of July. I've done the maths and reckon that the FREE DRAW negates the bookies edge on the PICK 2 numbers draw. What I mean is the true odds of getting 2/2 numbers from 6 is 65/1. The true odds of getting 2/2 from 6 in EITHER of the 3 draws is approx 24/1. Now I'm only paying for two draws in the betting shop and will be rewarded with odds of 55/1 for 2/2 from 6 numbers. The bookies odds of getting 2/2 from 6 numbers in EITHER of the 2 PAID draws also represents approx 24/1. Any maths experts confirm if this is true? I know it's still 24/1 but I might do a few small stakes doubles for tomorrows draw if it represents value.

Yes, its obvious he was tlking about that, and if you were paying attention, so was I and so was everyone else on the thread.

If it was out of 6 instead of 3, the odds are reduced by 6, which obviously even less likely.

As I said above I was aware what you meant.
And you will not get 600/1 on a full draw in the irish lotto. (the chances are about 400/1)

You will get close to it from a six number draw, and even still it is a terrible price/bet

But the bookie will not pay out 600/1 if it come up on any draw, it is about 200/1. This is wrong/mistaken here.

Also, you pick from 45 numbers not 47.

I think this is a +EV bet. Which bookie is giving the offer?

How did you come up with your first figure of 24/1? I get 21.68/1 for exactly one winning bet among the three draws and 21.34/1 for at least one winner.

You're right it is 21.34/1. I used the HYPGEOMDIST function in excel to find the probability of 2 numbers from 6 and got 66.
So (65/66)^3 = 0.95523068147035089183849514428027 is the probability you won't win in any the 3 draws. I rounded it up to .96. So you expect to win 4 times out of 100 giving me 24/1.

Using Bruce Bettings odds of 55/1 and without rounding up or down to two decimal places I get 27.25/1 that you'll win in either of the two paid for draws. Therefore am I right in thinking I'm being offered 27.25/1 about a 21.34/1 shot. Apologies if this is veering off "gambling" and more into the "mathematical" area.

    990 combinations of 2 numbers (45*44/2)
Bet €1 on each costs €660 (3 for the price of 2)
    Return is €840 (15 * 56 (assuming your odds of 55/1))

Or, assuming odds on picking one number (from 6) are 6/1, then
    45 numbers
Bet €1 on each costs €30
    Return is €36

So yeah, if you can cover off all the combos this is a great bet.

I'm one of the few success stories, before Christmas a few years ago, possibly 2005, I did 3 numbers out of 6. (No: 4, 16, 23)

    I had €6 on it @ 475/1.

    It was a good Christmas.

It is annoying to see your 3 or 4 numbers come up the 3rd draw if you have only covered them on the first two .This has happened to me several times but to accumalate one must speculate

no, in order to accumulate you should stop making bets when the odds a clearly against you:eek:

There is normally a dedicated lotto slip,
thick off the numbers, and if you are playing 6 or 7 number draw
