The hearing test for the PDF is the same as the RDF I presume?I have done the RDF one and you will fail if you listen to an MP3 or go out the night before!Luckily I got it but it is failable if you do listen to music etc.Dident help for our bus driver having the radio up near full whack on the way to it!

Is the medicals the same also?Again I got through mine fine for the RDF,cupping and all!!:(

Some people have said to tell the interveiwers you were a captain of a sports team,do they check this up atall?Dont want to caught lieing.I just want to cover all angles so as not to screw up.

    Thanks.

Well done, best of luck. Keep your head down, your eyes open and your mouth shut and you'll do fine in recruit training.Remember when you want to jack it in (and you will) that it doesn't last forever.

Hey folks just looking for some advice, thought I might as well try this forum.

Heres my situation at the moment:
    • I'm 16
    • I have my Junior Cert
    • I left school over a year ago for personal reasons
    • I'm turning 17 in just under a month
    • I am currently in a FAS course, but I have decided the office life won't be for me...

I remember reading sometime last year on a reserves website that you can apply when your 16 as long as your 17 the day you start training.

If this applies to the PDF, I am not exactly sure. A good friend of mine recently has passed his interview and medical so I would guess the application process takes around 2-3 months on average, so if I can save some time that would be pretty damn good...

As for my young age and education, would that hold me back interview wise?

I've also been looking into joining the PDF for some time now, so I have a general idea of what I'm getting into.

Any other advice would be very welcomed also.

    Thanks for your time, Conno.

    HI Conno,

I'm with muletide. Go back to school first and then join up. Whatever your personal reasons there are many other options to getting your leaving cert without having to go back to your old school.

To answer your question, there are no minimum educational requirements required for you to join the defence forces, but you will have to get a consent form signed by your parents/guardians if you are under 18.

Some of the defence forces most valuable members have come from similar situations and it is no reason to suggest that you will not make an excellent soldier.

Technically, your age and education will not hold you back at interview, but a board may well use their discretion if they feel that you could do with a bit more time to mature before joining (which is quiet likely these days)

There are schemes for those who join to go back to school and obtain their leaving cert through the army but there are no guarantees that you will be accepted for it down the road.

In short, you can join once you are 17 regardless of education, but you are better off coming in with as much education as you can. It will give you options inside the organisation such as trainee tech schemes etc, and when you leave in the future. You don't want to be trapped in the DF years down the line because you can't afford to leave, but can't get a job paying similar wages on the outside.

You have plenty of time to join up, and an extra year or two of education will be a massive advantage to you when you do.

Best of luck and feel free to PM me if you want

    Thanks for the helpful replies.

Although I'm sure the wiser choice would be to head back to school and get the leaving out of the way, I have my mind set on joining the army as soon as possible and have been for quite some time now.

I may try and get it done in the army, even if that isn't a sure thing, it couldn't hurt to try.

On another note I'm turning 17 on the 25th of July, so I was wondering if I should send away a set of forms I have here that I got from my friend that is joining and he had a spare set... I do not know where exactly to post the forms to though and he doesn't either since he got a friend's father to hand in the form because he is in the army, I'm based in Dublin if thats of any use.

Thanks in advance for any replies, Conno.

You should get in but I have a feeling this year is gonna be tight on Uniforms so get in on the first day you can so you can be one of the first to get a Uniform. and get it faster.
