Hopefully this will not turn into a my county is better than yours, Dublin vs the rest or anything like that. The issue of booing has come up in some threads over the weekend. My question is, do people think that it is appropriate to boo at GAA games? I personally have never done it at any GAA games and do not condone it.

What kind of booing would you not condone?

I boo at refs who make poor decisions and at players who are showing unsporting behaviour or violent behaviour. if it's performance and booing your own team I can't stand it. It's a disgrace to boo someone who gives up so much of their free time and puts in all that training, they don't go on the field looking to deliberatly put in a poor effort and everyone can have bad days. So basically I'm saying I don't like to see GAA fans booing their own team like soccer fans do, soccer players get huge amounts of money to put in good performances, GAA players don't.

I do not think you hear GAA fans boo their own players, I think the intention of this thread is discuss booing opposition players. To be honest I dont really have to much of a problem with it, I voted I dont care, I would rather not see it, but at the end of the day it is only a bit of noise, good players wont even notice it or will draw from opposition fans being so against them. It is no coincidence that Graham Geraghtys best game most seasons (for example) is against Dublin.

Booing happens from fans in many sports. Fans boo for different reasons. All situations are different. I don't think there should be as much booing as there is, but it often inspires the subject of it, rather than putting them off.

Booing is better than calling out racist slurs, imo.

I have never booed a team but there are a few refs i have booed! The standard down here in Wicklow has a lot to be desired give me a Dublin ref anyday and thats both as a player and a spectator!

I'm a referee but I can fully understand the fans in the Hill yesterday booing from when "the frees" were given up until it was taken. Not many people know this but there is a rule that prohibits defending players from waving their arms in the air and trying to put off a free-taker when the free-taker is going for the shot.I noticed a section of the Hill at the front were doing this before an almighty cheer erupted from everybody.

I think its ridiculous that people expect fans not to boo especially when an atrocious decision is given against that team that may cost them the game.If you think nobody is going to express their disgust, you are living in cloud cuckoo land.It is not nice to listen to but it is a way of getting behind your team and expressing yourslef when you are disgusted.

When the free is merited and called correctly, booing should not take place. It depends on the scenario for me so I voted "Don't care".I will boo when I know for certain that a wrong/very soft decision has been made.

Want i hate seeing is fans booing players on the opposite team or just booing when a free is taken or something. Booing a ref i can tolerate a bit more but i'm not a big fan of booing in general. Remember these are amateurs putting in a lot of hard work.

The way some of the premier league fans boo is a disgrace, man u v liverpool for example, just constant booing in the background. I think this is influencing some of the younger crowd to do the same at GAA matches. I really hope we don't end up down that road.

As for booing your own team.... don't get me started!

So no booing of any team then. What about when an opposition player headbutt's one of your own players, do you keep quiet?

Sure there are plenty of other sounds we can make, shout at ref, just general outcry. I just hate booing

Ok, so it's just the sound of booing that annoys you but not people shouting and showing their discontent with a situation.

I don't think the question was about if the sound annoys you and was more towards if it is ok to show you are annoyed at something that happened. (and booing is the usual response from the crowd to this)

No i disagree with what you are saying. The question is about booing specifically because for many people (obviously me included) it brings a very negative aspect to the game. IMO nothing wrong with banter, singing for your teams, fans making there voice heard about what they disapprove.

It is ok to boo Paddy Russell for the rest of the season:D:D:D
Seriously I don't like the booing when a guy is taking a free, kick out etc but it is impossible not to boo a bad decision made by an offical or unsporting behaviour from a player.
Will it be ok to 'Boo' Weekly during the Ryder Cup in September???

Ya like i said i may give in a boo a ref if there is a bad decision sometimes.

Its correct and human to boo a bad decision, is it bad to boo a kick from the opposition player when you're only one up and there's 10 mins left and he's kicking right into your end of the pitch?

It isnt, really. What escapes a lot of people's memories is that the old Cnal End terrace used to boo just as much as the hill (obviously I'm talking about Dublin Matches I've been too), and same goes for Tipp hurning matches I've been too as well.

Happens everywhere, wont stop. I voted I dont care.

Is it right to go down easily under a foul you could stay up for to win a penalty? Is it right to claim a 45 when you know it was a kick out but not obvious? Not everything is as simple as right or wrong. If it is something that can turn the match in your favour and really isnt a big deal then who cares? This isnt a game of golf where you call fouls on yourself etc, its a game where you take any advantage you can. So its an I Dont Care for me also cos i really dont give a (....) about booing at games. The Dubs did go a little harsh on it i feel on Sunday and maybe booed a little too much for subs etc but there were quite a few purple jerseys in the Canal End who had no problem doing it also. Simply part and parcel of the game.

I'd boo refs but not players. I did boo players at the Aussie rules once because they were so rough but that's a little off topic..

If only you could hear boos at some matches.Galway included you would be able to hear a eskimo fishing at Pearse Stadium.I like to boo and it help builds up the atmosphere witout resorting to the Mexican wave [shudder]

And how do fans usually make their disapproval known?? that's right, they boo. You said you would rather general outcry, what is that, everyone shouting obscenities?

If fans don't like something that happens on the field then they boo. Sometimes they do it for the wrong reasons like to put a player off when taking a free etc. but does that really matter, very little i'd say.

Boo away, f-all wrong with it.

    Unacceptable booing
Booing one of your own team's players. They do not play badly on purpose, they've put in a lot of time and effort, and deserve respect. Frown, give out, but don't boo.

Booing while an opposition player is taking a free. Unsporting behaviour of the lowest order.

    Accpetable booing
A referee for a very bad performance.

Does the ref have a bad game on purpose? To be honest, anyone who says booinng a player is wrong but it is okay to boo the ref is being a hypocrite. The refs are amateurs also, and willingly give up their time to do a thankless task that does not have any of the glamorous upsides that being a player has.

I dont see what the difference is in booing a team that are about to take a free, and cheering when they miss. At the Leinster semi final this Westmeath one was beside us, I swear to jaysus, everytime Dublin got a wide she was hopping around celebrating like Westmeath just got a goal!
