There were seven early houses in the tiny village of killybegs and twelve in the capital Dublin.Whats the story there?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 870 ✭✭✭Pen1987

^was that a serious question. If so its because early houses main business during the week comes from shift-workers looking for a drink after work. Gards, nurses, firemen, factory workers, printers, fishermen etc who work through the night.

Ah the memories of those drunken Friday nights leading to a drunken party and then onto an early house to keep that impending hangover at bay for another little while. Havnt been to an early house in a few years now but had some great times in them.

Great news, would have been a bit sad to have to drink at home on your own before 9am!

Theres a couple on Capel Street the Boars Head and Slatterys. Then theres the one up on Smithfield Square, Delaneys. Also you've got my favourite, the Wind Jammer on Lombard Street just off Pearse Street and near the river. Also the Chancery down the Quays near the Four Courts but thats a right dive.

The ones I know of in Dublin are:

The Chancery Inn (on the quays near the four courts)
The Claddagh Ring(just off Capel St near the pawnbrokers, Could have a different name now though)
There is another one on Capel St where the Luas passes.
The White Horse (near Tara St, has DJ's playing on a Saturday and bank holidays)
    Neds Bar (Townsend St)

Out on the liffey is gone. That was one mental spot for early drinking. I remember being in there one Sunday morning at 8am and there was a DJ playing. Place was packed,, lots of scumbags used to go there though so it could get very very dodgy at times. The bar is now called The Blue Goose. Think it is a Polish bar now.

I think since Padraigíns changed owners there is now none in Galway. Pretty shocking.

Someone alert me if I'm wrong

Padraic's in Galway was a legendary early house.

    It's gone a while now though. :(

    Never a truer word said.

Many Saturday mornings spent in there after having been drinking in apartment beforehand. Used to be busier than most pubs would be the night before.

Besides docks/harbour pubs having the early licenses, some establishments get an early license if located near a market.

e.g. Freeney's on High Street have the license, though not sure if they avail of it.

Yeah, it was a mad spot alright. Used to have a good laugh there though. I've been to that white horse and didn't like it much, seemed to be fights kicking off every two seconds. I've heard they actually charge in there sometimes as well
I seem to remember going to out on the liffey on sundays back in the day but am I right in thinking that there are no early houses on sundays now? Was living away for a few years so not too sure^^

Somebody should make a googlemap and sticky it, it'll piss off all the alcos of Ireland!
Charlies in Cork by City Hall, great pub
The Welcome Inn, Parnell Place in Cork, not such a great pub

Wasn't (isn't?) there an early house/club in the White Horse Inn as well?

    Ah memories..

I remember years ago a gang of us from work went to one, we had to work all night when moving premises so went to an early house in town.

I got completely shitfaced and nearly fell into the liffey at 9am. The daggers I got from people was unreal. They were all thinking, SLUT:p

The buzz in that pub though was fantastic, Im delighted they have decided to keep them open. Only fair to shiftworkers and fishermen etc..

There was indeed...it closed down a few months back after the Prime Time program was aired on RTE regarding cocaine use in Ireland. They had an undercover reporter who bought stuff outside the place on a particular Saturday morning. The other owners didn't like this and shut the early morning club down. It's still a normal earlyhouse now though...but not one of the best.
