Ring Questions

I'm a traditionalist and want to buy the ring myself before I propose to my girlfriend.

However, we have a new baby and life is very busy at the moment so it's quite hard to get time away from the two of them to go ring shopping.

I have an oppurtunity on a work trip up north this week to do some shopping, but I'm worried about sizes.

From checking in her sleep (seriously) I'm happy that her ring finger is smaller than my baby finger.

Given i'm not going to be able to return to where I bought the ring too easily for a resize I'm wondering how this process works.

Is this something any jeweller will do for a reasonable fee, or will they refuse to work on something they havent sold.

which is better, to buy too big or too small?

are some materials more suited to resizing?

I've know a few girls that have gotten platinum rings and are forever complaining about how quickly they lose their shine. Is white gold a longer lasting shine?

I know a lot of people think the woman should get to choose the ring, but its just not for me.

Oh yeah, are rings normally stocked in lots of sizes, or will it be a case of having to call back another day to collect the ring, cos that just wont suit.

    Hi Johnboy

Well my partner spent weeks picking out my ring as a surprise and i was over the moon with the romantic element attached to him picking it out himself. He got me a platinum gold ring and its still as shiny as the first day but that was only 2 years ago but still sometimes i think it looks shinier !!!
Platinum or white gold depends on your budget if you have the money then i would say platinum and most jeweler's would resize a ring for you no problem and i would say its definitely better to have the ring too big rather than too small , re-sizing is no big issue what so ever.. expanding a ring could be that little bit more hassle.

Depends on the ring you choose....what i would say is thou , dont pick a ring out "just" cause you have to on that day , if its not the right ring then wait till you find it , i no your busy but she will be wearing this ring for the rest of her life ...

Hello there. If you opt for a classic-style setting
(solitaire) it's a simple enough job for the average
jeweller to resize (though it's generally easier to size
down rather than up, as Heavyheart says). A competent
jeweller can resize both gold and platinum (plat requires
much higher temperatures to melt and some not-so-adept
jewellers might not want to approach it because they
lack the equipment and skill) as long as the change isn't
too drastic (about 3 sizes). If you have plenty of
jewellers in your area there shouldn't be any problems.

On a looks/wear basis, gold has a higher lustre (shine)
than platinum alloys generally. Both look pretty equal
initially because plat is usually covered in a high-gloss
rhodium finish (the same as that covering white gold).
Platinum will eventually gather a 'greyish' look (patina)
as this wears off. The plus side is that although it looks
scratched, plat doesn't tend to lose weight and can
be polished back to shiny health, while gold tends to
lose weight gradually as it is buffed down. Re-rhodium
plating plat is optional but with white gold it is needed
according to wear and your wife's particular chemistry.

Better wear is one of the reasons plat is much more expensive
than gold (also it's denser and rarer). For sheer everyday
wearability (lightness) and less hassle on repair etc, I'd stick
to gold -- but for something more likely to be passed on as
an heirloom and the like, I'd go for platinum (if I could
withstand the expense :)). Good luck.

did some looking both in cork and belfast.

some crazy prices down here for stuff. I was being told a grand to fifteen hundred extra for the platinum versions of rings in cork, versus around four or five hundred sterling up north.

    crazy.

saw some nice rings, and some nice rocks, but none in the right combination.
