    WhenIhadfinished,Iwentintoeachandeveryroomandstuffedhalf-eatenshrimpshellsdippedincaviar,
    intothehollowoftheallofthecurtainrods.

    Ithencleanedupthekitchenandleft.

    Whentheex-wifereturnedwithhernewboyfriend,allwasblissforthefirstfewdays.

    Thenslowly,thehousebegantosmell.

    Theytriedeverything,

    Cleaning,mopping,andairingtheplaceout.

    Ventswerecheckedfordeadrodents,

    andcarpetsweresteamcleaned.

    Airfreshenerswerehungeverywhere.

    Exterminatorswerebroughtintosetoffgascanisters,duringwhichtheyhadtomoveoutforafewdays,

    andintheendtheyevenpaidtoreplacetheexpensivewoolcarpeting.

    Nothingworked.

    Peoplestoppedcomingovertovisit.

    Repairmenrefusedtoworkinthehouse.

    Themaidquit.

    Finally,theycouldnottakethestenchanylongeranddecidedtomove.

    Amonthlater,eventhoughtheyhadcuttheirpriceinhalf,theycouldnotfindabuyerfortheirstinkyhouse.

    Wordgotout,andeventually,eventhelocalrealtorsrefusedtoreturntheircalls.

    Finally,theyhadtoborrowahugesumofmoneyfromthebanktopurchaseanewplace.

    ThenIcalledtheex,andaskedhowthingsweregoing.

    Shetoldmethesagaoftherottinghouse.

    Ilistenedpolitely,andsaidthatImissedtheoldhometerribly,
    andwouldbewillingtosignthedivorcesettlementinexchangeforgettingthehouseback.

    HerknowingthatIhadnoideahowbadthesmellwas,
    sheagreedonpricethatwasabout1/10thofwhatthehousehadbeenworth,

    butonlyifIweretosignthepapersthatveryday.

    Iagreed,andwithinthehourmylawyersdeliveredthepaperwork.


    Aweeklatertheexandherboyfriendstoodsmilingastheywatchedthemovingcompany,
    rapethehouseandpackeverythingtotaketotheirnewhome
