    Great question. I've spent an age going thru filmographies looking for the specific film.

    To begin with I'm looking at the female stars, but have an inkling that it's a male star playing drag in a talkie....

    I'll take the hint please...

    It was directed by another famous movie actor (of the time) but unfortunately he never directed again due to the poor reviews this movie received..

    Ok the silent movie link has thrown you so i'll throw in another final hint..It was made in the same year as Rebel Without A Cause and has one of the most memorable villains of all time..

    Fantastic question.

    I'd been looking at Night of the Hunter an hour back but couldn't see the silent movie star in there...

    LOVE HATE. Classic. Never seen it to be fair but have it sitting at home for a rainy windy night...

    I had also looked at it being one of the Gish sisters but somehow missed this one on Lillians bio...*slaps forehead*

    Ok you got it but you lose brownie points for not actually seeing it..The hype about it is justified probably alone for the cinematography and set design which when you consider it was made in the 50s was way ahead of its time.
