yes, but just try to ignore it, it's only for people who were spoilt as children, and don't understand the concept of mutual respect

No. We don't have crap like changing "baa baa black sheep" to "baa baa rainbow sheep" or forbidding Santa Claus impersonators from shouting "ho ho ho".

    They all have lovely bottoms.

Baa baa rainbow sheep? PMSL, never heard that one!!! :D

Worst one I heard was that a "Brain storm" should be called a "thought shower" since Brainstorm is offensive to epileptics! :pac:

What is your problem with multicoloured ovines

Yeah, that kinda crap - that to me is irrational political correctness. But we're hardly "besieged" by it.
OP, if you're referring to anti racism, then no, I definitely, definitely don't think Ireland is besieged by it.

The funny thing is that neither of those two stories you cited as examples of political correctness are even remotely true.

No joke, but the last time I was home I was watching Fr.Ted with my 7 year old nephew,
and he kept referring to 'Dougal' as the 'Special Needs' Priest :D:D

Really? Oh well, true or untrue, it's the likes of those that I'd consider political correctness gone mad, not what's often boringly cited as same by certain posters here. I'm no bleeding heart either though.

No, can't think of any examples. And it's certainly not enforced.

Bit odd to be talking about Santa and Winterval in the middle of June!

People who use the phrase "Political Correctness gone mad!" are almost invariably after saying something that would make Prince Philip himself think "Jesus, that's a bit off".

Which the OP didn't do, I just heard somebody say something absolutely appalling earlier on today, and then he tried to defend himself with that, so it's been on my mind. I mean, sure, there are some sensitive grey areas - potentially offensive words that have been adopted by the groups they apply to for instance - but what this guy said was not one of those times.

Lots of times Political Correctness has value. Problem is, the odd occasion when the idea is applied stupidly, it makes a better "It's a funny old world!" bit in the News Of The World.

the original concept of PC'ness was really designed for the school environment to help people who were 'different' in some way (fat/skinny/specky/downright ugly/different ethnic group etc) enjoy the learning experience, without feeling uncomfortable.
In that respect/context it's fine. The downside of PC'ness is that it has, to some degree, stifled intellectual discussion, because when dealing with sensetive or immotive issues, people will nowadays just say the PC thing for fear of getting lashed out of it with a hysterical reaction for speaking their mind.

Finding the right balance is not easy, and I'm not going to try to pretend it is

I can think of a few. has you access to the Dark side?

I do think it has gone a bit OTT alright.

Residents Against Racism are prime examples of PC gone mad and an example of this would be when they went and defended the (illegal?) Afghans who were starving themselves in that church, one or two confessed to horrific crimes back home iirc, yet everyone who wanted them out was branded a racist.

We've went from being anti-immigrants to OTT pro-immigrants to the point where saying anything negative about them will have you branded a racist in a flash. You cannot critisise the immigrants in this country without being branded a racist or a xenophobe whatsoever.

I don't feel remotely besieged by it. Why do you ask?
