CA Antivirus won't let me turn it on!

I had a 3-PC licence for CA Antivirus and my original PC died a while ago so I've just got my brand new one delivered. I've downloaded my 2nd copy of CA Anti Virus to use on it, and it'll let me update it and perform system scans, but it won't let me actually turn on the realtime protection! When I try to enable this is tells me that the changes require a reboot. When I reboot, the protection is still turned off! I've tried reinstalling, but no luck. I've got Vista 64. Any ideas what the problem is?

There've been reports that the floppy disk scanner causes a conflict somewhere; you'll need to turn it off.
Open the antivirus window and then click on Options on the left. On your keyboard press ALT + D and then under realtime scanner open the Floppy scanner and turn OFF all three options. Click on OK and then check if the realtime scanner is enabled.

CA antivirus is however in my experience a terrible product, and I certainly wouldn't trust it to protect my system. For a free alternative give AVG a try, or if you're willing to pay, get NOD32 or Kaspersky.

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried as you said and it didn't work, still can't enable it. I've uninstalled it again and will look at the alternatives you suggested. Would a free programme really be sufficient protection? I've always had my doubts about them.

AVG, although free, will perform much better than a lot of paid antivirus programs. It's not perfect but it does the job.
