With the great weekend that is this one today I got thinking and looking forward to the next long weekend and its not on till August which is the end of the summer. We are always going on about having more Public Holidays,we have to start making our unionist neighbor's feel more at home/at ease with us.

So I think its about time we made July 12th a Public Holiday in the Republic, its a win win situation in my eyes we get another Public Holiday and its at the hight of the summer. We also open up a bit more to our unionist neighbor's,and its not a random date as this is part of our history as well.

It may well be political suicide for a politician to suggest this at the moment but lets start the campaign here.

That would be a bit stupid now. Would we have to have to participate in marches down nationalist areas (erm 99.99% of the republic) slagging ourselves off? Salute the Union jack? Build huge bonfires with the tri-colour sitting on top? Call each other fenians and papists? This is quite possibly one of the stupidest suggestions ive heard in a long time.

I do not think July 12th should be a public holiday. Perhaps we should adopt July 14th to make the French feel welcome.

July 12 should only be a public holiday if April 24 is one first...

July 12th sounds delightful. We could all go for a brisk walk down the queens highway and enjoy the glorious weather.

Why not? As a nation we celebrate the shambles that was the Easter Rising whereby we managed to capture and promptly lose a Post Office and a biscuit factory, why not celebrate yet another embarrassing defeat in a long line of embarressments, this time the Irish Catholics fighting for the English king against the Vatican supported William of Orange.

Have we actually ever won a battle since Clontarf?

Ok, so how about we make it optional? Those of us who love the idea can can have the day off, and the rest of you politically-conscientious patriots can go to work as normal.

    There - everyone's happy!

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Yes lets celebrate this battle, after which we had our land taken off us, sent to hell or to Connacht, treated as inferior beings, and just look at the Famine. A million die and another million emigrate because the British force the Irish to export their crops while the famine sets in. Just an example of what this country had to go through after 12 July

I know a lot of people in this country are ignorant of their past, but seriously this suggestion takes the biscuit for stupidity.

BTW didnt we win the War of Independence as well?

    ?

Ignorance and not caring are different. I dont dwell on stuff that happened last week never mind a century and more back.

Days off affect the here and now, which funnily enough is where I live. It could be done on an opt in ,no penalty basis. That way you can enjoy your day in work whiile I lie in then do as little as possible.

I think July the 19th should be a public holiday instead.

Celebrate Galway being liberated of indians.

Wow, mate you should really do your homework on the Battle of the Boyne, it's consequences and who exactly was fighting.

It'll be an eye opener for you.

OT if Ian Paisley's birthday was being offered as a national holiday I'd be all for it. Anything that gets me out of the office for the day!

    It's not an argument...it's a FACT

and what would be the point, it would only antagonise half the country,

Honestly though, we really should have a bank holiday in july. Theres been talk in that last number of years about Ireland getting 1/2 bank holidays because other european states have them. Sounds stupid, but at the moment I feel like im being conned out of 2 days paid leave from work at the mo ;)

And if your leave year runs from April 1st to March 31st (like mine) there's less bank holidays this year because of how Easter fell in last years one.

    Grrrr.
