1100 hundred troops a night? That's a million every 9 days, how have they not 'pacified' Iraq by now?

    No it's not.

Well as far as I know you can't 'arrest' someone but if you see someone performing an obviously illegal act you can tackle them or apprehend them or whatever and then call the guards.

When you think about it really that's all the power that security guards have in places like shopping centre, the right to hold someone who they suspect has performed an illegal act.

Pretty much it. You have the power to 'arrest' someone if you have reasonable belief that they are committing an criminal offence e.g. murder, rape, assault... If you decide to 'arrest' someone you must state that you are doing such. You must also be cautious that you cannot let them go or release them to anyone but the Gardaí, ie you cannot 'unarrest' them. But in holding them under arrest you must be cautious that you do not leave yourself open to assault charges (if you need to hold on to them stating that you are arresting them until the arrival of Gardaí is sufficient, afaik). You can't hold the person in a locked room or anything like that, they must be able to attempt to escape...IIRC! :pac:

If you decide you are going to perform an arrest you'd want to be bloody well damn sure they're in the wrong otherwise be prepared for major legal fees. :pac:

Very true, but you can't possibly believe that isn't an error on the media's part? 1100 hundred? Say that out loud and tell me you don't think it's a mistake.

4.—(1) Subject to subsections (4) and (5), any person may arrest without warrant anyone who is or whom he or she, with reasonable cause, suspects to be in the act of committing an arrestable offence.

    (2) Subject to subsections (4) and (5), where an arrestable offence has been committed, any person may arrest without warrant anyone who is or whom he or she, with reasonable cause, suspects to be guilty of the offence.

    (4) An arrest other than by a member of the Garda Síochána may only be effected by a person under subsection (1) or (2) where he or she, with reasonable cause, suspects that the person to be arrested by him or her would otherwise attempt to avoid, or is avoiding, arrest by a member of the Garda Síochána.

    (5) A person who is arrested pursuant to this section by a person other than a member of the Garda Síochána shall be transferred into the custody of the Garda Síochána as soon as practicable.

    (6) This section shall not affect the operation of any enactment restricting the institution of proceedings for an offence or prejudice any power of arrest conferred by law apart from this section.

subsections 1 and 2 are the powers of arrest for the public or "citizens arrest"

    *makes note*

    April 2008

Go to Fagans of Drumcondra, citizen arrest Bertie Ahern on a charge of corruption.

Or, if what he said about 8 pints of Bass not heavily affecting his ability to drive is true, ram his car off the road afterwards and attempt an arrest.

Come on it's obviously a misprint. The volume of soldiers going through Shannon a daily basis doesn't even approach that number. I would have thought that the mixture of digits and words was a dead giveaway.

I'd imagine it would be cringeworthy.

years ago, a youngfella from our area robbed an armful of stuff from the back of a truck that was making a delivery to the shops. he legged it down our road and was hiding in one of the neighbours gardens. the oulad scully came out and grabbed him by the scruff and says "you're under citizens arrest" and the fella turned around and loafed him in the head. that was the end of that citizens arrest.

    Thats a great story lad
