I am currentl looking around for a 1999 or 2000 golf diesel, in no hurry at all.
prices seem to vary hugely, can anyone tell me roughly what i would need to spend for a good one, not much over 100k miles, 5 door.

Varies alot, I would recommend going North or UK for one. Make sure you get don't get the E/Basic Spec model, this comes with no electric windows. Get one with a history and preferably one that is owned for a year or so by current owner. Timing belt changes are important and make sure there's history to back this up.

I'd say you would pick up a nice one for €5-6k VRT inclusive. Here's a couple to look at...

Thanks for that site link, never saw it before, good site.

1 problem I have, one of the ads said 42mpg from a diesel golf, is this about right. I was hoping for around 50+mpg ??
