Oh horrible. Extreme weather conditions - not good. When it comes to most things I tend not to go for middle-of-the-road, except for temperature - a nice moderate temperature ftw. Another reason why I'd only move to England or Scotland.

IRELAND - You want a decent school, you can pay for it. You want to use a decent road, you can pay the toll. You want a new car, we need 30 percent on top of the price for vehicle registration tax (then we'll add the vat to the entire amount). You need to see a doctor - that'll be 60 euros. You need to go to hospital - some of your hard earned cash please. Your mother is ill so you want to buy a house close to hers - we need 100,000 euros to stamp a piece of paper for you. You need the services of a dentist - cash please. You're self employed but not working - no welfare for you my friend. Your house was burgled - sorry the garda are doing speed checks on the stillorgan dual carriageway (major accident blackspot). The elderly people in rural ireland are being terrorised in their own homes - sorry we need to close the local garda station as we cannot afford to keep it open - sorry how much was the rise you put in for bertie!! Yeah all in all it's pretty much the best place on earth to live!!

Germany is very cheap! I paid €1,50 for beer in pub, 5-10 miles from center of Berlin..

But would you be willing to pay higher taxes?

People often point to countries such as Sweden and note how good their health system and infrastructure are while complaining about how ineffective ours are.

But people fail to realise that the money has to come from somewhere. Scandanavian countries have higher income tax rates than us.

This is why they can provide good services, longer maternity leave etc.

But people here moan and complain about poor services and moan and complain about tax rates that are not that high in the first place.

You can't have everything at a cheap price. Someone has to pay for it.

I'd say most of the UK is grim - motorways upon motorways upon motorways; Little Chefs/Travelodges; B&Q, Halfords kinda places which are seeping into Ireland now. Real Daily Mail/Telegraph, Thatcher legacy kinda stuff - nasty. But if I had to leave the country it would still be my first choice.

I'd just move everyone else out and stay here.

Have lived in both countries. Edinburgh is nice. Quite a few Irish people there too.

ehh... thats the feckin' point - we pay a lot and get nothing but a big pile of non-working overpriced expensive crap here...

I would GLADLY pay more taxes here or in any other country to have a system that works.... and not just basics like healthcare but infrastructure/transport/energy etc...

They pay more in scandanavia .. but look at what they get for gods sake ..

    absolutely no comparison...

There's no comparison because they pay much higher taxes.

sweden, finland and denmarks health services rank below ireland according to the WHO http://www.photius.com/rankings/healthranks.html

sweden and norways public debt as a % of GDP is twice ours and finlands is more than 50% higher, ours is 21% btw

Toronto is well inland, that's why it's so baltic. Vancouver has a very similar climate to Irlanda, with a nicer summer.

Yep-too many scummers, scangers and chavs. Bit like most towns in Ireland at this stage.
My favourite thing about Canada is there's none of them here.

    nice

I read that government of Dubai gives every mature man an apartment for free! Just like that, for better start! And also the medicines are for free there.. And you don't have to pay any bills, government do that for you in Dubai!!! Sounds like paradise isn't it?? :)
Sure does, except for the fact that as a visitor to the country you can get the mandatory three years jail sentence if you bring a packet of OTC Solpadeine through customs with you. The amount of stories about guys getting 5 year jail sentences for having the butt of a joint stuck to the sole of their shoe on entry is amazing.

Dubai is a basket-case building-site economy just waiting to implode.

In Bahrain for example there's no taxes at all!! All money comes from oil.. That's what my friends from there told me! And government is giving you a check every month just like that!
..and of course the oil will last forever, won't it? *checks watch*

South Africa still. Cape Town or as far away from Johannesburg and Durban as possible.

Bavaria, Finland and Iceland spring to mind otherwise.

Thanks to college am in an absolutely heavenly beautiful part of Germany, small town called Trier. There is wonderful nature from every direction out of this town and here you can actually drive on the motorways as opposed to park on them :pac:

Definitely considering coming back after college. Weather is better here too and it is such a simple but wonderful pleasure to sit outside here without being blown to bits by the gentle breeze we have all the time in Ireland. Find the Germans grand too, so far!

That's funny! How are you finding Dublin? Big change, no doubt! Really enjoying your part of the world here, I don't want to come home at all! Was in Ghent and other parts of Belgium last weekend and spent the whole weekend shivering after the heatwave we had here in Trier. Brrrrr ! Reminded me of home :(

True but even though those countries are wasting so much of money they still spend only 30% of yearly income! Plus Gulf countries owns half of America as well.. So it's not gonna be stopped that soon. ;)

I heard they forecasted 32°C for the upcoming Tuesday, so be prepared ;) I think you could write books about the differences between the Liffey and the Mosel area but that's not the purpose of this topic anyway
