Yes, you're wondering why I closed the voting thread. Well, the jist of it is that some people are using more than one account in order to steer the course of voting in their favour. This is leading FotW into rather nasty, competitive territory, and away from the fun, community based vote it's supposed to be. Anyone with the inclination can just sign up another account or two and tip the scale.

There's been ploblems with the voting system, it was never perfect, but its just rampantly open abuse now. This isn't something new either, I've seen it happen before on the Rock & Metal board, with certain people using alternatie accounts to vote. Now, I've let the thread play out, rather than cancel voting right in the middle of it, but that's the end of it.

Before anyone asks, yes I'm willing to reconsider it, but for the time being, Film of the Week is over. If it's going to be revived in future, we'll need a completely different model for choosing the film.

Right, I've reopened this thread so that everyone can discuss it, and not take other threads off topic. And yes, before anyone asks, Meet The Spartans is an official Film of the Week. If you want FotW to return, you can go and show your support here.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Yes, Film of the Week has returned.

I actually didn't think it would be taking so long for the private forum to be created, and I'm actually itching to get it started again. Now is as good a time as any. The model for choosing the film will be similar to what was suggested here, so the first new film (In this case, it's the Lives of Others) is my choice, but someone will be randomly picked to choose the next film. Don't ask me to let you pick, because chances are I won't pick you then. :)

The private forum has not been created yet.

Interesting concept. I just hope the private forum doesn't become a sort of 'water cooler' where snide remarks are made about people behind their backs...
    Turning wives against husbands.
    Children against fathers.
    Neighbors against me!

When will it be? I have an awesome film in mind.

That's the admins call i'd say. I do like this new model while we're waiting. :D

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,130 ✭✭✭✭Karl Hungus

Well, I think the private forum isn't really needed as much now, as long as this new model goes to plan and it doesn't kick up a storm, so there's no rush. But yes, it is up to the admins. I'm glad people are liking the new model, and thanks to Cianos for suggesting it. Even if it isn't a success, it's definitely worth trying for a while.

No remarks will be made behind people's backs. Except for you. In fact, we're all making comments behind your back right now. :pac:

Just in reply to Cianos suggestion, how will the list be maintained? A thread sounds good, since each post is numbered create a no discussion thread where each poster posts once that they would like to be in FOTW. i would reccemend the new person gets picked on a thursday (some people only use boards in work) and then if that person does not confrim back via pm/post by monday it assumed they are away or not able to do it that week. that way you can pick someone else who still has till friday to pick and write about their movie

    Anyone remember this?

    Is this not FoTW already?

No, it was just a list that anyone could submit a film to. FotW gives each film it's own thread for a week.

So, how do people find the new model for choosing FotW so far?

Sheebus, i just saw this now! :pac:

Re: the new format. I suppose its looking well. I long for the (most likely far away day) when my idea for a FotW is chosen, provided no one else picks it. Some might not like the new format, but as we all know, democracy can only take us so far..

    i like it :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 5,729 ✭✭✭Pride Fighter

Its good, the people who choose it obviously pick a film close to their hearts and gets a good debate going.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,469 ✭✭✭guinnessdrinker

The problem with it is, that if somebody picks a film not many people have seen or heard about, it won't get much of a debate going.

It may inspire people to go and watch the movie though but for starting discussion it might not be great.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30,746 ✭✭✭✭Galvasean

I think thats fair trade-off. This thread is full of posts by people whose lives have been enriched by finding gems on the list.

I like it but i was wondering how they are bing picked i dont see any sort of thread or anything where people request and you said not to pm you in a previous post so im not sure how one goes about putting themselves forward to do film of the week?

The biggest reason people cited for FotW returning is that they discovered new films because of it, and this is a problem now!? Honestly, no pleasing some people...

When choosing a new film, people should feel encouraged to pick films that many people haven't seen or heard of, rather than go for token classics that everyone's already seen. I think we can expect to see more interesting and left of field choices over the coming weeks, and this is a good thing.

Nobody can put themselves forward, that's the beauty of it. I'm picking people purely at random, and saying it's your turn to choose the film this week. I don't even want to know what film it is until they've created the thread, I'll find out along with everyone else.

I think its good that people have discovered new films through FotW, me being one of those people so I don't have a problem with that at all.

The point I was trying to make was that as a means of starting a debate it may be limited. Reason being, if somebody has never heard of a film, how are they going to debate it.

Where as, for example a well known or controversial film wins, then there is more of a chance of a debate and discussion.

I was trying to give constructive criticism on the topic, I didn't intent for anyone to become defensive over the matter. After all some feedback was asked for on the new system. Not all feedback will be overwhelmingly positive, no matter what the issue is. Why ask for it otherwise?

I'd disagree with you there, I think there's a fair few examples of people who haven't seen the film coming back to a thread after a while and offer their thoughts on it.

Indeed, we could have some more controversial choices, it's completely up to the person picking the film. If they want to stir debate by choosing a film, it's their call, just as picking a film they think more people need to see is their call. It's all very up in the air with an element of surprise.

Oooh, now who's becoming defensive? :D

Just because I've asked for feedback, doesn't mean I have to like it, or smile and not poke holes in the logic of said feedback. Now I don't mean to be defensive about anything, my comment was meant to be sarcastic.

    Thats fair enough.

Yes, all good points. The only thing is, that I have seen people on here before compain in the past that win a film won the FotW that there was little discussion about it though.

I know, otherwise you would have asked for positive feedback only
The only thing was, my post was not as positive as some of the previous posts and so it was brushed of with a sarcastic comment.

There goes my chance of being asked! :p

But your post wasn't brushed off. I made a tongue in cheek comment, and then adressed your post in a serious manner.
