€100 FREE for new Halifax credit card customers

What think ye? If I have a credit card with another institution, will I have to pay €40 stamp duty on this card as well?

you will pay it on the card that you are closing, then you get a letter from your current financial institution that you have paid it for the year, as stamp duty is for the previous year not the coming year.

They have also put up their rates as I have a halifax card at 9.5%, these are 10.9%

I just applied for this, not sure if I have to pay stamp duty on a second credit card. It doesn't matter anyway it's still at least 70 free monies

You will pay €30 on both, unless you close the other one, and get a letter from your old bank saying you had paid the 30, Halifax will then supposedly refund the fee.

i took out this card in March when they had the same offer. Just one point to note - Halifax Credit Card Online Banking is non existant... I had planned to close by BOI CC, but am holding off on that until Halifax get this sorted.

Still up €70, and herself the same so easy €140 profit

If you a looking for a cheaper card in the long run, AIB Click mya be worth looking at.

You dont get the €100 but it is 8.5% APR

they pay the 100 after your first purchase,
as the stamp duty goes on your card, does it count as a purchase?

if i got this, bought my self something for 70eu and cleared the stamp duty would i be able to just close the card?

As an alternative you can get 6 months free interest on balance transfers which can be worth way more than £100. Plus if you are cancelling another card you don't have to pay the stamp duty the second time.

You have to give an awful lot of information.
I don't remember giving that much when I got my cc years ago.

This has mortgage amount, outstanding, salary, all sorts.

Is this normal now. Maybe I didn't notice when I first got mine as I had nothing really to declare then.

Last time I applied these guys wouldn't give me a credit card, despite the fact I'm earning in excess of €40k a year and have a PTSB credit card for 7 years. When I rang they just said I didn't score enough points and no further information. Did it happen anyone else?

Ive applied for this card this past Wed night so Im just waiting to see if another account pops up on my Internet banking screen. Im assuming that if nothing happens at all within a week then I might as well forget it. The company is based in Louth and so far no one from there has phoned me thus far to ask about any details on my application. The last time I applyed for an Overdraft they approved me, but the time before they didnt, I think it just depends on how long you've been with the company. I have a current account with them so that could be a bonus.

Thats how it is done, once you close one account your ok, you pay for one account for the 12 month period.

i opened a current account with them in december, at the same time i opened a saver and a credit card account.current and savings opened no problem, the credit card account was refused, i didnt score enough points, even though i earn >40k and have an aib card for 7 years.

will try again.

i just applied to tesco credit card, accepted, had to send my bank statements etc, now been waiting for 10 days and no sign of them

I have the card from Halifax and they credited the €100 to my account when they had the first payment from me as promised. I understand that to be able to view your account online you must also have a current a/c with them....was thinking of opening one just so I can view credit card transactions...anyone else do this? is their banking site good?

Transactions from credit cards cant be view online with or without a current ac. They are working on this at the minute i believe and will be up and running from next month. Has been been covered on boards before.

Scoring could be:

Their internal scoring system, whereby they input your personal and financial details into their application software, which in turn produces a score (which, if below a certain threshold, means they must decline)...

OR

The credit scoring, where they refer to your credit rating and if you have too many debts/unpaids/etc then you don't meet criteria and you're declined...

OR both.

Halifax also have a Visa debit card. Would the stamp duty apply to this? Combine it with an overdraft and you have a credit card but only one account to look after.

Stamp duty does apply to these cards, but it is €20 (€10 for the ATM portion of the card and €10 for the Debit portion of the card).

I don't see what the big deal is with setting up accounts, they are relatively easy to setup and manage.

BTW Halifax current account has no bank charges and if you deposit €1500 per month you'll get 10% interest on up to €2000, that will give you €160 per year after DIRT.

The offer is worth considerably less if its per month as you say. I was under the impression that they would pay 10% on a maximum of €2000 sum per month.

I canceled my credit card after the first month because of this. If it's coming back I might return, especially as I've already paid my stamp duty!

Basically you put €2000 in the first month and leave it in for the rest of the year, you then need to put another €1500 per month in, but you can take this out again at any time, basically you just need to get your wages paid into it on a monthly basis and then you can spend/withdraw the wages as you want. You will continue to gain the 10% on the €2000 if you leave it in there.

The interest is paid monthly, but of course the 10% is per annum, so you end up getting about €16 interest per month. You didn't think you were going to get €200 per month did you?!!

10% per annum is still the best interest rate you can get on €2000 from any bank in Ireland by a long shot.

Of course not. I was under the impression that I could lodge 2k every month, so I'd get 16 the first month, double the second month and so on...
And after a year, the account would've yielded 1250 in interest.

You are probably right though, I thought it was a bit too good to be true. The ad could be a bit clearer though
