I dont think many people in Dublin will be too impressed if a few trees and a lake stop this project. They will be put back. No more delays - just get the fuppin things built. Its because of attitudes like the OP's that these things take an eternity.

I think the last sentance of your post is very general darkman2. I certainly don't go opposing everything left, right and centre but this plan for the Green has bowled me over.

Oh and for the benefit of clarity I'm not a Dub myself.

I got my first ever feel of boob in one of the sections that will be closed off...

Can't help but think of the balls they made of Fairview Park with the Port Tunnel construction. So far no attempt seems to have been made to restore they damage the did.

They should have bought up the land where the old Eircom building used to be just down the road there, that would have been a much better site for the station.

so what about tara/skryne? what about all the other "green" spots being built over/developed etc around IRELAND? wheres the outrage? (presumably in the local forums)!

I would tend to agree that Stephen's Green is a bit off centre for a central hub ... but would the city survive a couple of years of having O'Connell Street dug up, for instance? (Under Trinity pitches would probably be as central as you could get, in fact, but can you see that happening? :D )

I don't really like the idea of the Green being pulled apart, but I would be a lot more agitated if it were for an office block or a road. At least the Green can be restored afterwards on this project.

And if we could improve the Dublin public transport system somewhat, maybe we could actually cross the street to the Green without choking on exhaust fumes from the volume of traffic? Hell, at the moment even as deep as it is possible to go within the Green, you're still breathing exhaust fumes!

EDIT: MF, where was the old Eircom building?

Who is "we"? i dont have to feckin travel anywhere near there these days... "we" ? ... dont speak for me!

I think it was Eircom... it was to the left of the Gaiety. It's been completely demolished for new development and is currently a very large hole in the ground.

    I think it's a fuzzucking travesty

    that is all

I wouldn't dream of attempting to speak for you, flanum, I think that prodigious feat would be well beyond my meagre capabilities.

However, it is our capital city, like it or not. I don't live nor have I ever lived in Dublin, I'm a westerner. I would still prefer to see the city improved rather than destroyed.

No I thought MF meant on O'Connell Street.

Ideally they should just bring the frickin Green Luas line down to O'Connell street to meet the metro there, like they should have done to have the Luas lines meet in the first place.

Ah, I think I know where you mean all right. Can't remember what was there before though.

Actually could we not use this as an excuse to knock down an ugly building instead...? Perhaps get a Metro stop at the Central Bank on Dame Street.

It was dug up for 4 or 5 years during refurbishments and LUAS!!! It was dug up all the time after that too! Is it still dug up now? Haven't been home in ages

    Aye, or Liberty Hall!

Though the Central Bank would be an ideal location, tbh.

It would also be far more disruptive to the city's emo population.

The metro literally has to run through that little patch of land? The luas managed to avoid it...

Oh, dear! I've just constructed a whole x-files plot in my head about displaced emos throwing themselves under the bulldozers in protest, and manifesting themselves as avenging ghosts in the Metro station years later! :D

I brought my first proper ladyfriend there and we fed the ducks. As I grow older and all the good experiences of life are consigned to memory I would like to revisit the damn place! This sucks much ass. Theres plenty of ****ty concrete monsters to dispose of first.

Those assclowns haven't invaded the green have they?
I thought the central bank was their spawning ground.

said it before and ill say it again. why not knock down the whole of westmoreland and dolier streets and turn them into a massive public square with metro stops integrated. (yes i know there are listed buildings standing in the way of progress)

...In the thread I linked too it was mentioned that the Green isn't the ideal place for a central hub as it's not strictly in the city centre and it was suggested that O'Connell Street or it's surrounds would make a much better location for a central station. I'd have to agree with this...

What do you mean by "it's not strictly in the city centre"?

It's about 1 and a half kilometres outside the city centre?

Let's not get into semantics here. Depending on your point of view Stephen's Green is city centre (in a broad sense) or it's x distance from the city centre, if you think of the latter as a point on a map. (Personally I tend to think of O'Connell Bridge as the "point" which represents city centre, others may have different markers in their head.)

One way or the other, I think we can at least agree that the Green is situated / skewed to the south of city centre, rather than bang smack on the nose.

The idea that there is a "point" marking a town or city centre is -- when it comes to transport or other planning -- of no use whatsoever.

The city centre is an area. Not a very well defined area, but an area. And the green is in the city centre.

Forgetting about the idea/area/point/whatever of Dublin City Centre, the location of the purposed transport hub at the green is closer to more offices and other workplaces than O'Connell Street, and the location is not about Metro North, but more so where Metro North can link with the interconnector or "Dart Underground".

You can read more about the interconnector on the following pages...

    http://www.transport21.ie/Projects/Heavy_Rail/Interconnector.html
    http://www.transport21.ie/Projects/Heavy_Rail/Electrification_of_and_Provision_of_Rolling_Stock_on_the_Dublin_Suburban_Network.html

EDIT: Anyway, if all of the Dublin public transport Transport 21 projects ever see the light of day, we'll have a number of "hubs" around the centre of Dublin...

    St Stephen's Green
    - South-west/Northern Dart line
    - Metro North
    - Luas green line

    O'Connell Street
    - Metro North
    - Luas green line
    - Luas red line

    Pearse Station
    - South-west/Northern Dart line
    - Northwest/Southern Dart line

    Drumcondra
    - Metro North
    - Northwest/Southern Dart line

    Docklands
    - South-west/Northern Dart line
    - Luas red line
    - Commuter (as it now looks like the overground Docklands station is not just temporary)

    Connolly
    - Northwest/Southern Dart line
    - Luas red line
    - Commuter
    - Intercity

    Heuston
    - South-west/Northern Dart line
    - Luas red line
    - Commuter
    - Intercity

... and many of those have a large amount of buses passing by too.
