Nissan Primera 2003 burning oil

A mate of mine has a Primera, 2003, 1.8 petrol (30,000 miles) which is burning oil at about 1 litre every 3 weeks (150 miles). There are no visible leaks. I suspect there may be something seriously amiss, any ideas as to what the problems might be, and what the fix might cost?

My mate thought Nissans were pretty bombproof so is a bit shocked.

    Cheers.

Nissans haven't been terribly reliable for years(in saying that they're not the worst of them out there). A bit like VAG and Merc, living on past glories by the sounds of things.

They've been 'infected' by Renault(most of them are based on Renaults these days anyway, and all the diesels are from Renault too), though I think the Primera is from the pre-Renault era.
