'Apocalyptic literature is of considerable importance in the history of the Judeo-Christian-Islamic beliefs and traditions, because it makes specific references to beliefs such as the resurrection of the dead, judgment day, eternal life, final judgment and perdition.'

    Not again...*Loads Shotgun*

Google'd that date and all I found was info that sounded like it escaped from a star trek movie....
In english, what is actually supposed to happen? What is supposed to kill us?

It'd be a cool way to die! Very quick and painless!
It's a pity the world will end just before Christmas though:( That really sucks.

The world will end? Finally now we can all get some peace.

BTW didn't Nastrodamas, the Aztecs, the Incas and Jesus all predict the world was going to end and what happened to all of them, They died. If it is true then i'm not too bothered about that i just hope someone will tell me before hand so that i can take my cyanide pills and won't feel a thing when it happens, i'm not afraid of death just how it happens

also apparently there is also a date that the earths axis has been the closest to something and they fear it will cause the world to flip??!! im not 100% on he date but december 2012 at 11 in the morning..type the date into google and it will be all over the place! also apparently every explorer and every ancient greek and roman etc pointed to this date for the end of the world as apparently it seemed the most logical! mad stuff!!

meh... it's all bull****. the Mayan calender ends... whoop de do, just flip the bits, it's like another version of the millenium bug. the whole sunspots thing? maybe, but it sounds like another cyclical thing being overblown by the narrow minded...

oh and on the CERN thing... there also exists the probability that one day i will simply be transported to mars (based on the whole quantum duality crap). should i stop going outside because of this threat?

I think there are about 4 different things all mixed up in that opening post.

ITER is the what is being built in the south of France at the cost of about 6 billion euro.. It's a fusion reactor.

As for the magnetic poles shifting... I believe this happens on average every 500,000 years... and it's about 640,000 years since the last one. But it's reckoned that it's a process that takes about a 100 years to happen, during which time the magnetic field will be heavily weakened, which will mean we won't have as much protection from the suns radiation as we would like any more.

Its actually in both countries, its quite a large hardon collider.

But switzerland cannot be harmed due to their magical shield of neutrality.

I remember we used to have one two

Please get sucked into a black hole and take your equinoxes with you. I suppose you believe stars determine your personality too. I don't mean to be rude but I hate people, in general. What "25,800 year cycle"? What are you basing in this on??? If the world DOES actually end, then you won't be able to say "I told you so", because we'd all be dead.

Get the f**k over yourself mate the universe allingnes I didn't make it that way its a fact. Don't remember sayin the world will end. And you do mean to be rude it's all you got.

I can say this much for CERN, sitting out in the summertime outside restaurant 2 surrounded by some of the most intelligent people in the world it feels like the best place in the world to work....

Then you remember you're actually in Switzerland (actually think Restaurant 2 could be just in France) and Geneva is the world's most boring city and it's just a nice place to visit with great views.

Ok, so been reading lots about his now and there dosnt seem to be any reason to think the world will end.
So what if all this crap happens with the sun etc.... Exactly how is that going to affect us?

It may not affect us at all but if the Earth did not have a magnetic field we would have no protection from the Suns radiation.

Think the end of the world stuff just makes for good TV.

You mean when the sun expands enough to consume Mercury and Venus and boil off all water on our planet how will it affect us?

Oh, its worse than that, it will consume Earth and Mars aswell but that won't happen for another 5 billion years. The Earth will be hostile to all life in a billion years anyway because of the sun's life cycle as it will get alot brighter and hotter before it expands.

But before all that happens our galaxy will collide with the Andromeda galaxy and what happens there after is anyones guess.

The future sounds fun, I'd love be around to see it all.

Its a star, its going to die the same way other stars die.

Would be funny if all that money spent [6 Billion Euros] on the project and it turns out it does absolutely nothing. :o

Convert the place into the world's longest kiddy train ride! :D

didn't this machine get mentioned in a dan brown book, might have even been part of the story line

Nope, that's the worlds largest particle accelerator at CERN in Switzerland. OP's talking about the Large Hedron Collider.

I think the risk is a'ight.

The LHC is the worlds largest particle accelerator, and its located at CERN (which spans the Swiss/French border)

OK - technically, it will be the world's largest when it comes online. There are, however, several other accelerators at CERN.

Brown never mentions when his book is set, nor which accelerator in CERN was used to create the antimatter, so it may or may not be the LHC that he was referring to.

nobody said the sun would die on 2012 and i don't think anybody would but when the Sun finally hangs up it's boots it will expand to swallow up most of the Solar system it's what stars do it's their fat Elvis stage

The good news is that if it doesn't destroy the world, it will probably help with the whole Grand Unified Theory thing!

Well maybe someone is planning to fire a barrage of hydrogen cheeseburger missiles into the sun in 2012.
