Magnesium/metal slides.

    This is totally out of curiousity, but what's the difference between the two? is one actually better, is it preference or what?

    the two? the magnesium one is metal? A type of alloy i think, so they one and the same.,

    Ah right. Bit blonde there, sorry. just think i seen the bell m1911 had a magnesium slide and the we version had a metal one or vice Versa. Fair enough!

    the bell M1911 is full ABS, not metal at all., although it feels lovely and its a better performer than the WE version., i have one myself, highly reccomended., :)

    You'll find almost all slides are made from a magnesium/aluminium alloy (often 5052 or 5086 on the good quality units). It's done for weight, strength and longevity, as steel alone would be far too heavy, while pure aluminium would be too weak and neither would last too long on an airsoft field.
    The magnesium increases the strength of the alloyed aluminium (the main, but not only, other metal in the alloy) while still retaining many of the characteristics. It's an incredibly strong alloy for it's weight which is why it's used in aviation (landing gear etc) and marine (hulls) application a lot.

    Just to correct myself, I made a slight typing error there. I meant to say that pure aluminium would be too soft, not too weak. There is, of course, a world of difference between soft and weak when talking about materials.

    Apologies for the mistake.
