Would your online friends be able to find out if you kicked the bucket?

Bit of a random question, but here goes.

It's prompted by a uni lecturer a friend of mine used to stay in touch with via email.

He died suddenly and as he had only stayed in touch with my friend by email, the lecturer's family were only able to notify my friend some weeks after when they were sorting through his belongings and found an email he had printed out with my friend's email address on it.

Bearing in mind that perhaps you are the only person with the passwords to your email accounts, bebo/myspace/facebook/linkedin/other social networking site, - and if you got hit by a bus or something - would any of your family or close friends be in a position to contact any of your online friends to let them know?

    Sorry it's a bit long-winded, but I guess I'm curious!

It'd make it onto Boards pretty quickly if I died.

Don't use bebo or any of that shít so it'd probably take longer for my offline friends to find out than the people I know on Boards.

I thought about this ages ago actually and as a result put all my passwords with the respective accounts in my safe box in my room. be easily cracked open i suppose, it's an old combination lock but means if i do pop off, the list (with instructions not to haunt people) is there

Think i'm just greedy and want a massive blowout of a funeral :D

I actually died three weeks ago. And not one of you fukkers came to my funeral

Now I'm gonna haunt boards and haunt it good, you brought this on yourselves!

yay i love hauntings! its like a friend ya cant see.

on a more serious note. i have mentioned it to friends who are offline and on because sometimes i don't see certain offline friends for over a week so ya never know. when i said it to a certain friend they became misunderstood and thought i was suicidal. so i didn't ask them again...

It's the internet - we're all dots in space . "Oh ! Such and such is dead . He was funny/annoying/boring . I'll head over to AH or feedback to cheer myself up . " [/thinks] .... and within the hour you'll be lolling or lurking as per usual .

Last December some boardsie's noticed my absence (probably glad!), one posting an enquiry on TCN where I frequent. My flatmate posted to let them know I was in hospital. So if I croaked, ye all would probably get a virtual wake invite.

my online friends (most of whom wouldnt be on boards) would almost definitely find out, as they're all on the same sites where my boyfriend and two of his mates hang out. i reckon one of them would mention it.

what i'd be worried about is how many of htem i'd find out about if they died.

as for boards... hmm, im not sure, i know there's some people on here with accounts and stuff, my bro, childhood friend, but i dont know if anyone would think to pop in and let people know.

On emo forums you probably can't log off for your lunch without the place thinking you've sliced your wrists open and having an e-funeral.

Well I always imagine myself to die heroically. I think someone here would start a thread saying 'Girl died while saving others from sinking boat, she is our national hero' Then someone would point out-OMG, thats WindSock!
Then will come the WindSock appreciation threads and tribute acts.

Bsed on previous experience I'm guessing it would take about 20minutes for the wholeworld to know I was dead.

This isnt the first time this thread has been done but everytime it pops up its a good lol.

My ex girlfriend and my my longest serving male friend both frequent boards so it would probably get mentioned, moved to the CW forum, spammed and locked pretty quickly! As for bebo, facebook, etc, nobody has left me a comment in over a week, so I don't know if word would spread much on those media.

    (what a morbid topic!!)

If I recall it wouldn't be the first time a friend or family member has signed on as a dearly-departed boardsie to issue us the bad news.
