Sellers adding that bit extra to make some extra money. I do not buy from people who do this.
I actually actively search for sellers with very high postage costs. They are usually the cheapest overall, for obvious reasons. Only ebay lose out, my heart bleeds for those penniless fellas.

If people cannot understand the postage issue, they should really look into how ebay works. When you really know how ebay works you can take great advantage of it. Most don't have a clue how it works but think they actually do.

Whats the point in paying high postal charges ,if the goods are the same price?
A lot of people have already said ,it's only the irish rates that are relatively more expensive compared to UK rates.

It's fairly simple. People bid on items, if they win them they pay for the item & postage costs and the seller ships it. Then ebay get a certain % of the selling price of the item. What am I missing :pac:

That's the idea of eBay, not exactly how it works though.

Sellers pay the fees to eBay, and in an effort to keep these to a minimum, and hence offer the best deal to buyers, they often cover the price of the item in the post. That's how it actually works now, so buyers should always note the postal cost before bidding on anything. Anyone who whinges about postal charges after they have bid, obviously doesn't understand quite how eBay works.

The price of sending postage from uk to ireland and byond has gone up recently (like everything else ) .I sent a small thin e4 size catalouge yesterday to dublin cost = £2.85.

Some ebay sellers include cost of packaging (padded envelopes ) in P/P costs but it is annoying to pay more in Postage costs than for the actual item .

    Why?

The cost of P&P is not proportional to the market cost of the item! The cost of P&P is proportional to the size, weight and packing materials of the item.

I am on both sides of the fence here .

The whole point of selling on ebay is to make a profit ,even a small one but i myself have actually brought down the price of P/P on some items cuz it was going to cost the buyer more than the actual item they would buy from me .People will be put off if they see the P/P cost are more than the item .....we are all looking for a bargin in buying and to make make a profit in selling

You have said it all there, ebay get a % of the selling price, they do NOT get a cut of the postage. Imagine in a buyitnow auction the postage was not disclosed, it was combined with the price and this was all you saw.

The same seller, selling the same item, using the same post method etc. Can offer me the product at a lower price by having increased postage, yet he makes the same profit.

The next time I sell something on Ebay ,I'm going to double the postage cost.

Then people will buy my item because it's cheaper than the rest:D

Exactly right. Dunno if you are taking the piss there, but that is exactly what happens.

If people can still not get their head around it then take this example.

Seller A & Seller B. They both buy an item for €100. They want to make €50 profit on the sale. Postage of the item costs €50. Ebay take around 4% of the sale value

Seller A lists his item as buyitnow for 1cent, postage €200. This means he will make €50 profit (and the 1cent of which ebay take 4%).

Seller B lists his item with the real postage €50, now to still get his €50 profit he has to charge €156.25. Ebay take 4% of his 156.25 leaving him with €150.

So for sellers working on the same margin you can see how the ones charging high postage can afford to offer you an item at a lower cost. I have seen the same seller with 2 auctions for the same product, one with high post the other with low, which were working on this principle.

So if you want the pay the extra €6.25 to ebay so you feel you are not being ripped off, then go right ahead.

I can see why you like using ebay this way ,but what if the goods have to be returned ,or they don't show up ?

Who foots the bill then ,does the seller have to refund postage costs because an item was not as described, or never turned up ?

Charge back on credit card. I wouldn't even bother trying to get money with paypal or ebay anymore- they can screw you on currency exchange even if you do get a "full refund", with chargeback you really do get all your money back.

I would do this if the seller was high or low post.

If anything goes wrong, and it's covered by Paypal buyer protection, then you should get back the item price and postage cost. What you won't get is the cost of returning the item to the seller, if that's what has to be done.

Rubadub's example perfectly illustrates how to make the overall cost to a buyer cheaper, by increasing the postage. This also has the effect of not reducing the sellers profit. Win win for everyone, and as long as you don't take the complete piss with the postal charge vs item price, then eBay won't really care.

It's definetly something to take into account ,but shopping around is still essential though.:)

On ebay Lots of feedback doesn't seem to mean much these days ,when you use TOOLHAUS.ORG to research.

There are shops on Ebay that have very low postage charges ,they are the most reliable sellers I've dealt with.

Lots of UK sellers use parcelforce. They are very expensive. It includes insurance which cost the extra. Like a 1.5kg satellite receiver cost me 20 Sterling shipping.

A 28KG set of speakers on komplett from Holland cost me 20 Euro.

I was looking at a CPU last week, price for postage to UK was 3 sterling, international, 50 sterling!

Actually parcelforce are cheap compared to normal royal mail (I think PF are part of royalmail).

I had to return a small 2.3kg package to german by the cheapest an post rate, which was €34

I bought a Nintendo DS lite game last week postage was 12.99 sterling

I paid it cos my son wanted the game badly and still worked out cheaper than buying new in shops, plus its not out here yet but I am still waiting for it, thought the dearer postage would have got it here quicker.
