I've heard of chinese corners in dublin but i don't know the location of them.
Does anyone know or would be interested in trying to start one?

Also in the ilac centre library they have language exchanges for many other major languages, why dont they have a chinese language exchange?

    Hi,

I'm not really looking for a teacher, but if there are Chinese people around interested in meeting for having a chat and language/cultural exchange (my mother tongue is French, my English is pretty good - and I took some Mandarin classes but I was no brilliant) you can PM me or contact me directly at borisonline[at]netcourrier.com. The language part would be great but I don't have to high hopes (about myself anyway) so on my side it would more be about fulfilling my curiosity about China :-)

And if it is of interest, I am French, 27, and have been studying/working in Dublin since 2004.

    Boris

    Hi,

I'd very much like to learn Mandarin. I'm looking for a tutor thats qualified and can give one to one lessons and has experience/qualifications in doing so. I'd like to learn with a Beijing accent if there is someone from there that can teach.

I live in Wicklow but can commute to Dublin city or the county southside.

Please PM me if you can help.

UCC has a Chinese Studies course in its Art faculty. It's new but they aim to teach culture as well as Mandarin. They expect students to be fairly good at it by the end of first year so even if you don't continue it you'd have a good grasp of it. There is some literature avaliable online at http://www.ucc.ie/en/DepartmentsCentresandUnits/ChineseStudies/ . Use the links on the left to find what you want.

I did it this year and found it very difficult.
The oral work was fun and Pinyin was in general fairly manageable but when it came to characters, most of the class got lost.
The teachers are all Chinese and I don't think they understood just how difficult it was for us to get our heads round the characters.
They expected us to recognise about 200 by the end of the year.
I'm not continuing it this year, even though I would love to do the culture.
As far as I can gather, I could do only culture in 2nd year if I want to but in 3rd year I'm obligated to do 3rd year Mandarin.
    Nonsensical.

Does anyone know where I can learn Mandarin in Cork? Are there any language schools, night classes, etc. Do they teach it in UCC? Could someone recommend any book/CD sort of thing to get started?

Since Oct 07, there's a Michel Thomas CD... beginner and advanced. You can learn Mandarin (zhong guo hua) very well with that.
How would an absolute beginner start to learn chinese and which type is best? Mandarin I know is the main one but Cantonese seems to have a large following too. I am a native Irish male with fluent english if that helps any.

There is no "best"... Mandarin is more common. Cantonese is generally spoken in Hong Kong and a select few areas. The characters they use when writing is all the same though, so that part is good :)

Cantonese is spoken in the south, Taiwan and Hong Kong amongst other places.

There are two writing systems - traditional and simplified. Traditional is used in Cantonese and simplified mostly used in Mandarin.
The official language of China is Mandarin and most newspapers, street signs, books and websites are in simplified format.
There is a lot of cross over between simplified and traditional writing but its tough learning either and simplified gives you a usability payoff straight away unless you are going to be researching ancient Chinese scripts or something.

It is also worth noting that Taiwan have their own dialect. Which is much different than Mandarin or Cantonese.

In Taiwan and Hong Kong, they will understand Mandarin if you learn that one. I think they switched to using simplified characters after 1955 or something, so only old people will use those.

Unless you know you are going specifically to Hong Kong, it is probably best to learn Mandarin...

    Hello all,

I'm an Irish guy looking for a language exchange with a native Chinese speaker. I've been to China and I'd say my level is near intermediate but like all things I haven't practised in a while and so am a bit rusty. I'm willing to meet up in Dublin once or twice a week for an hour or two.
