The judge noted he had received personal letters from Labour TD, Mrs Kathleen Lynch and from a former Lord Mayor of Cork, Mr John Murray, indicating that Casey came from a good family with integrity. He said, however, that he felt there was little in the way of mitigation rising from them in all the circumstances.

Have they nothing better to be doing?? :mad:

Innocent until proven guilty (granted he's been sentenced). If it was your mate wouldn't you give him the benefit of the doubt if he said he didn't do it?

They must have felt him innocent and wrote the letters accordingly.

How exactly did they feel him innocent?

Anyway, it's coming back to haunt them now, there's a lot of anger in Cork over it. They won't be able to bullsh*t their way out of this.

Indeed well there you go. They made the call, wrote the letters and now people ask questions why.

However, if they felt him innocent then why not try to help and as such why criticise them over it? If you were accused of rape tomorrow and claimed you didn't do it you'd like your friends and family to write letters stating your integrity etc. If you failed and were found guilty how you you feel if I said your mother, friends and family had nothing better to do than try and get a rapist out of jail and put a big angry face after my post.

Attack the rapist, not someone who felt/believed he was innocent, it doesn't matter a jot that they were politicians. Have you nothing better to do than give out about them? What if Casey had been proven innocent? Would it still have been a "haven't they nothing better to do" situation?

one of the victims was on red fm earlier (she wasnt named) saying Lynch should be ashamed of herself

Lynch was one of this woman's representatives in her constituency. fair play to the victim for coming out and criticising her, it was a very brave thing for her to do

Pfft, people are just reading what they want from this, Lynch did an honourable thing, something you would want if you were in a similar situ, the convicted guy is, i guess, a pariah at this stage, no one is suggesting he should be freed, compassion applies to everyone.

Now let the rabble tell me he should be executed.....

the politicians in question wrote a letter based on what they knew of the guys character.

it's easy to be wise after the fact - i don't belive they did anything wrong - if they did anything they probably tried to help the parents (constituents) of the accused and now convicted rapist.

politicians up and down the land regularly write to the minister of justice on behalf on constituents - it's not unusual to do so.

if you were a parent of an accussed person whom you felt to be innocent and asked a politician to write a letter on the integrity of your offspring, to which they refused on the basis that they simply couldn't possibly write a letter on behalf of someone accussed of a dastardly crime but as of yet not proven - how on earth would you feel?

Mr O’Leary said Casey was in effect a first offender and there were matters which came to his credit to be considered by the court. He was someone who wouldn’t come before the courts again and counsel noted that while Casey fought the case and gave evidence denying the allegations as was his right, the defence accepted he wouldn’t be punished for that.

"This sentence will wreak devastation not only on my client but also on his parents," counsel said.

What the f*ck? It honestly sounds like the defence counsel was trying to use his family's "good name" and the fact that this was the first time that Casey had come before the court charged with rape as his defence. That's cracked - apparently only repeat offenders from "bad backgrounds" should be convicted as sex offenders now?

Well, if they knew the accused so intimately well as to be able to definitively vouch for his character without it seeming to be a shallow gesture and potentially an attempt to pervert the course of justice, they might have, for example, attended the hearing and volunteered to be questioned as character witnesses by the defence in order to establish the accused's "good character".

If they don't know the accused so well as to be able to defend his character in person and while being questioned, then perhaps they should, I don't know, not write letters claiming that Person A is a "person of good character" when they don't have any personal experience on which to base the statement and can only offer their genealogy as a basis for it?

When this question was put to her she said she "felt bad for the family". Very very unprofessional imo, I bet her PR team are still cringing tbh.
