Spotted this story up north about sniffer dogs being used to 'crack down on illegal drug use' at nightclubs.
    http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/northern_ireland/7352751.stm

    Cannabis, cocaine detected so far.

Is this the holy grail for getting drugs out of the clubs ? :D

I can just see users getting pumped up before entering and getting hallucinations when they see the dog :)

Nightclubs in County Down are putting permanent sniffer dogs on their doors to root out people smuggling drugs.

Several premises in Banbridge are using the specially trained animals, which are usually seen trying to detect contraband at airports.

Ten people were detected with drugs on the first night springer spaniel Molly began work at the BLU nightclub at the Bannville House Hotel.

Quantities of cannabis and cocaine were confiscated and the police were called.

A sniffer dog is also being used to screen people entering the Coach nightclub in the town centre.

The animals are operated by a company which specialises in dog handling and the detection of illegal drugs.

    I approve!

Used to work in a club and it always bothered me that you could never be sure wtf was really going on in there.

If they can train them to sniff out date rape substances all the better.

They have them at Escape in Amsterdam, the amount of people who left the que when they saw them was unreal, very funny... It was the local police who instigated it though, not the club...

Have a snifter of brandy with your sniffer?

As it said in that article, on one night it stopped ten people with drugs going in. I think its a fantastic idea. They should have trained "People-Who-Turn-Into-Violent-Morons-After-A-Few-Drinks" sniffer dogs.

since i dont do or carry drugs, it wouldnt bother me in the slightest.

i cant think why anyone would be worried about it.
    oh, hold on...

I'd love to have a sniffer dog on the door, it'd make my job soo much easier. At the moment we've to be on the look out for shifty/dodgy looking individuals, and basically follow them for the night to see if they do something stupid.

Wouldn't bother me cos i dont do or carry but i can see why plenty of people would object... generally people on stuff in clubs dont bother me so i dont know if id actively advocate raining on their parade either.

wouldnt have a problem either with it-dont touch the stuff but if people know there's gonna be a sniffer dog will they take all their pills/coke before they go in and then end up overdosing?? the coach in banbridge is a big drug spot (or was anyway before the dog).

Tbh I would choose not to socialise in a bar/nightclub that felt the need to have bloody sniffer dogs on the door. Hardly indicative of a high class of clientele, is it?

Seems like your implying places that do have "high class clientele" wouldnt have anyone with drugs in heading into the place.

Lets face it, drugs are in every scene. The sniffer dogs are a great idea!

Is it the dogs or the people taking drugs which would cause the bigger issue for you?

I do not approve. People getting wasted and start fighting, ****ing and generally acting like complete retards is fine, but getting high? God no. They might... sit down or, or get the munchies. The horror!!!

Can't see it working to be honest as alot of the clubs that appear to be legit are dodgy (e.g. INLA and CIRA have "the door" - that should speak for itself really).

Plenty of money out there so they'd be damaging business. It's be nice tho - can imagine the dog controller using the dog as a chat up line to all the young ones on skimpy skirts! :pac:

If you really thought about that before posting i dont think you would of post.
What about the people who do take drugs and start fights etc.. Yeah some people relax as you say but some dont.
Just like your point about people who get drunk, some relax and have fun and others start fights. So really you have no point.

Where as alcohol is legal and the drugs are not. So bring on the sniffer dogs!

Id imagine sticking dogs in an enviroment full of unpredictable buckled drunk eejits would result in a lot of freaked out doggies. Ofc they'd be trained not to freak out under these circumstance, but at the end of the day, they're animals.

You're saying illegal drugs and alcohol have the same effect. The only stipulation being drugs are illegal, (not taxed). Maybe you'd like to make alcohol illegal? You don't seem to have much of a view beyond 'Yay drink, nay drugs'. It sounds like you have no point.

Edit: To make myself sound like less of a bollux, whats your view on any substance that causes a violent reaction?

    This.
I'm waiting until one dog freaks out and tears the face off of someone, which'll put the kibosh on this idea pretty quickly.

I dont think this will happen the way I see it is the dog would not just be handed over to a doorman but would be provided with a handler trained how to control the dog, the dog is then also highly trained and when these dogs find drugs they are trained not to attack or jump on the person but to sit down in front of them.

I think its a bad idea people who take drugs wont stop but will instead take more before entering a premises to last for the night this could result in more hospitalizations and at worst deaths.

i don't see the point in this tbh, it's the people on alcohol that are starting all the fights and trouble not the ****ers loved up on e.

Unless sniffer dogs can detect enlarged puples they are not going to stop lads taking pills just before they enter the night club.

It's an idea by silly billies for silly billies!

If they brought it in down here it'd be a disaster, going out in Dublin is poxy enough with drink prices, door prices and nazi doormen and some people want sniffer dogs too! Hillarious carry-on. If people don't want to do illegal drugs that's fine but why would you advocate ruining a night out for the next man just because he's doing something that makes his night more enjoyable for him!

Even the thought of sniffer dogs on doors annoys me, do people honestly want this type of thing??? We're supposed to be going out and having a good time people not going through customs and excise to get into a club, it's shocking!

For instance, a few weeks ago i was out by Portmarnock for a 21st and went to Tomangos at the door the bouncer scanned my passport into this computer thing and all my details came up on this screen so basically they had all my information on their database, i was thinking "what the **** is this all about" but said nothing as i had to get in. Then when we got in my girlfriend left the jackets in where there was a fingerprinting machine to identify her for when she was getting the jackets out, i couldn't believe it! The only reason i put up with this bollox was because i was out for a birthday, i would never give details like that to any establisment in town, it's a disgrace!

Do people really want this Big Brother style behaviour when all we want is a good night out?

What sad times they are. When exactly was the last time you decided not to go to a pub based on the fact that there might people there on drugs starting fights? your talking utter rot there. What kind of drugs do you think incite voilence exactly?
The only reason i can see anyone backing this is so they can give themselves a sanctanmonious pat on the back 'i dont take drugs, so it doesn't bother me'.

Drugs are indeed in every scene, and I do not support the use of drugs at all. However, there is clearly a distinction to be made between some scumbag with his gelled fringe and checked shirt off his face on a cocktail of drugs and someone going into a more upmarket place having done a line or two. I'm not saying either are laudable behaviour but I am asking whether or not you recognise that there is a distinction there. I know whose company I'd rather be in.

Perhaps I shouldn't have posted because it would probably be the people taking the drugs so I am going off topic as the thread is about sniffer dogs. Anywhere that needs a permanent sniffer dog presence can't be up to much.

yes, i know what they are trained to do, but they're usually used in airports and such, not outside nightclubs with stupidly loud music and people. Loud noises scare the bejesus out of dogs, so i'm wondering how long before something goes horribly wrong?

(or, depending on who they maul, horribly right)
