What's the craziest drink you've had?

Inspired by this article about hangovers while on holidays -

    http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,23355572-5011960,00.html
    Horror holiday hangovers

HOW did you get the hangover from hell on your overseas holiday when you only had a few drinks?

"Every culture has its own potent brew," says Dr Tony Gherardin, National Medical Adviser to The Travel Doctor group. "In Bali it might be arrack, which is akin to straight vodka. In China, it's a Mai Thai which smells like kerosene.

"But because your body isn't used to it, it's going to affect you differently. And where the locals would have maybe a small shot, after a meal, we go there and drink in much larger quantities."

One such cultural brew involving a preserved seahorse was the undoing of Mark, 35, while holidaying in Hanoi, Vietnam.

"There were vendors at little tables on the streets with jars of liquids with things submerged in them – apparently that was the national liquor.

"We sat at one of the stools and drank shots out of one promising looking jar, which had preserved seahorses floating in it. The guys serving us told us it was made from quality rice from a local village.

"It was pretty raw – but after a few shots my throat was anaesthetised enough for it to go down without too much trouble.

"After a few hours I made it back to my hotel, not feeling too tipsy at all. But the next morning was another story altogether. Head spinning and pounding, stomach churning, I had to travel 500km south to Vinh, squashed into a four wheel drive with half a dozen others.

"I found out later that the stuff I'd drunk was made from cassava not rice, and with all sorts of additives, seahorses the most benign. I made it through the day, dry retching in the car. I was sick the next day too. Being offered cold steamed sheep's tripe for breakfast didn't really help."

    "Cultural brews" are pop luck

So what is it that you are drinking?

Arrack, Mai Thai and Jungle Juice are just some of the generic names given to the mysterious potent cultural brew whose ingredients change depending on the vendor, their budget, locale and maker. The truth is, you don't really know what's in them.

Dr Gherardin says this is the most likely cause of those hellish holiday hangovers – not knowing what is in your drink.

As Mark discovered in Vietnam, you may be getting cassava and a dead seahorse when you think you're getting rice.

Be careful, and as Dr Gherardin warns, "be particularly wary of home-distilled spirits from friendly hosts. These can contain methanol instead of ethanol, which can make you go blind."

    Hangover cures

And how do you deal with that hangover from hell?

Drink lots of water, says Dr Gherardin, and replenish your glucose levels by drinking cordial or juice.

Make sure you travel with electrolyte sachets on hand to mix with water, according to Louisa Comito, a naturopath based in Melbourne. She also says black coffee can take away the pounding head, if you can stomach it.

"Hangovers are the result of your body being poisoned, so you need to flush out the toxins. Lots and lots of water," Comito says.

Anyone had this mad seahorse brew while in Vietnam? Or anything else completely off the wall for that matter?

(I await Ruu's choice of TK Lemonade :D)

Can a drink be crazy? Surely thats like asking "Whats the angriest food you've had?" or " Whats the most sympathethic car you've drove?"

Anyway, if there were a proper answer to this question it would be this.

Ever the pedant Pighead. While I appreciate your liking for words to be used in the dictionary sense, I know full well that you understood the context that the word 'crazy' was being used in. Cheers for taking the time to point out the discrepency though.

And please, feel free to give me a suitable alternative and I'll get the thread title edited just for you.

Pigheads torn between "Wackiest" and "Daftest". Probably edging slightly more towards "Daftest" due to the alliteration potential. Cheers Xavi. Appreciate your flexibility on this issue.

Had a work night out at Leopardstown Races a few years ago and we were drinking what the barman called "Shítface"

Basicially he got a pint glass, ice, then put a shot of pretty much everything that was on an optic, and then filled the rest up with coke.

Work were paying for it but we paid for it later with the hangover!!!

Other than that I got fairly plastered drinking Cava in Fiji.

Chinese rice wine*. We used regular shot glasses instead of the little thimble ones. We also went to a pub and drank beer and tequila in the same night so the results were not plesant. Now if I ever have more than one shot of rice wine I spend the next day like that mark lad. vomitting and dry retching for several hours.

*Its somewhere between 40-60 % I can't remember how much the one we had was.

Stumbled back to a friend's house after a night out and had 3 shots of chilli pepper spirits. Have absolutely no idea where it came from or what it was made of but it was clear with a chilli pepper floating in it and tasted like tobasco sauce mixed with vodka.

Worst hangover I've ever, ever had...:(

Moreso in the Basque Country, but popular in spain in general and some european countries, "Kalimotxo" a 50/50 mix of red wine and coke. The wine has to be bad..... ah feck it read the wiki

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calimocho

´tis great schtuff, though the hangover can be dire, especially during the hot summer. Diarrhorrea is a well known side effect too for the un-initiated.

The story goes that it was invented where I live, so ´tis very popular around here.

    That is all.:D

My worst one was a Suicide Tequila

Basically you sniff the salt, down the shot, then squeeze the lemon in your eye. I'm not sure which part is the worst.

EDIT: I see the poster before me has it covered, just a different name. Mad shit altogether!

A few nights ago me and my girlfriend resigned ourselves to having one drink each. that one drink was 4 shots of vodka, diluted with other spirits, alcopops and ribena....in a large vase filled to the top.

First time I've been drunk after 'one' drink.

I drank dirty black chain saw oil that my old man had left in a mineral bottle. Really hot day and and I downed it quickly as the bottle was full. Horrible taste off it. My mother stuck me under a tap for 10 mins washing my mouth out, then off outside again to cause more havoc.

Vietnamese snake wine with the dead cobra in the bottle. I drank it in straight from the bottle and threw the snake at the lads.

Blue aftershock and OJ, also known as the poor mans fat frog. It turns the same colour but is way cheaper. Gratuitous pacman :pac:

I've a bottle of 68% Absinthe here its lethal stuff. I've never had anything that has ****ed me up so badly as that stuff.I have the spoon for balancing the sugar cubes over the glass and all. First had it in the states, picked up a bottle in Heathrow and when I got to Denver I ordered the spoon to my student mailbox. When the lads saw it in my dorm room they thought it was for smoking crack. I also ended up drinking Mescal with a Colorado State Trooper one night and it had a maggot in the bottle. I was well bolloxed after it. He had taken it off some Mexican lads that he had pulled over earlier. Sucks for them haha.
