D4 Slang

    Was just thinking about the whole new vocabulary that the wannabe Americans have introduced into the country? I only know the few do...

    Tobler- to be alone
    Britneys- beers
    Daniel Day - Luas
    Morto - mortified
    Probs - Carlsberg
    Ken - Heineken

    What else is there......... ?

    Reminds me of Ross O'Carroll-Kelly sitting in on an English lecture in college.

    Says the lecturer:

    "In the English language, a double negative is a positive. In others a , including Russian, the inverse is also the case, but there is no incidence in the English language where a double positive forms a negative"

    Says Ross:

    "Yeah,...Roysh"

    i wouldnt class them all as "D4" slang. I grew up most for my many years in tallaght and we used toblerone alot (while burning out cars!). "The Daniel" in reference to the luas is also used frequently too.

    The whole D4 thing is a bit of an urban myth IMO. Ringsend is in D4 and has some shady spots. Blackrock, foxrock or howth are not in D4.

    Cockney rhyming slang is used all over dublin.

    Should I just grab the Ross O Carroll Kelly books and say all the slang there originated in D4 or does someone else wish to? I'm not to John B, to be honest. I'd rather go have an Allied Irish.

    thats definately not D4, everyone i know uses it, im from kildare and i go to college on the northside and i hear it all the time.

    Again, never heard of any of the ones the OP mentions, except "Daniel Day" for the luas was used across dublin for about 2 days when it first came in, then never again.

    How is a britney a beer? I can kinda see Britney = Spears = sounds like Beers, but I can't see any real person actually saying such things.

    none of these are american or D4. they are just sayings people use, and pretty crap sayings. 'tobler' has been around for years and it definitly didnt start with D4 or wannabe amercians, it was actually a scanger saying years ago. the rest of them are just realy, really crap attempts at cockney rhyming.

    i think these would be the correct D4 terms for those sayings:
    to be alone - on your lonesome.
    beers - would be Lager or Bruskies.
    luas - would actually be the Dart becuase the luas doesnt go anywhere near D4.
    mortified - would still be mortified, becuase it is a D4 saying itself. leave 'scarlet' to the scangers.
    carlsberg - who drinks carlsberg in D4?
    Heineken - Heino or Heinys
