Found out from Recruitment that they usually send out letters of appointment 5-6 weeks before the expected intake date. If needed they can defer your appointment to a later intake. It was mentioned also that they select candidates for intakes based on merit pool numbers.

Considering they’re moving onto the 5th intake for this campaign (i.e. 25th May) you can assume that the merit pool is now up to the 250 numbers? Although I do know from a serving police officer that the first few campaigns were very small. This would mean they’re still low down the merit list numbers for selection... probably around 150ish
Strange also that they’re selecting higher numbers as mentioned in earlier posts (700s).

I’m confused to how strict they are selecting people based on merit? Any of you guys know what the craic is? It must be simply that you are selected based on your place on the current crop of people who have passed everything.

    Hey everyone,

I've just applied for Campaign 14 and have found this forum a great source of advice and knowledge, so thanks very much! :)

However, after reading through some other forums I found, mainly covering English and Welsh forces, there seems to be a distinct lack of job satisfaction and general contentment in the job.

Mainly concerning how all the new recruits they receive, view everything with rose-tinted glasses and how they quickly learn that it's not what you see on TV!

I myself would like to believe that I have a great respect for the job as does everybody here and that if I was successful in selection, I wouldn't be so naive to expect it to be any easy ride!

I understand that the PSNI is completely different in regards to other forces, but can anyone else comment on that, serving officer or just starting out perhaps?

Out of interest, the forum I was looking at was www.UkPoliceOnline.co.uk

    Thanks

Interesting. Its still a bit unclear how they choose people though, I mean people on here being called up with 700's merit placing last month, and others with low merit numbers also.

Only thing I can think of is that there were very few catholic applicants, so maybe only about 100 or so made it to the top 440 of the merit pool. other wise why are guys like me and others on here with very low merit placings being put through the rest of the process, when we have confirmation of people getting dear john letters with much better merit placings than some.

    Thoughts?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 43 CooperCop

I guess the Dear John letters are for those who have not passed everything. You may have a good merit number but if you don’t clear vetting then expect a Dear John letter.

I guess they have a pile of successful applicants ranked in order of merit who have passed everything, including vetting. The fact that some guys have low merit numbers and still not completed vetting etc could well be a fault of the change over from Consenisa to PSNI at the later stages of the campaign. Seems it could also depend on when you originally applied. The earlier you applied then the further through the process maybe?

I too Failed the IST my first time when I was 17.... wasnt until my 2nd time that I passed it and then passes assesment centre, and here I am.

Its not the hardest test ever by no means, but it is tricky enough if you take it lightly.
Thought this was ur first time applying! well this is what u keep repeating!

I lied. it is my first time going through the whole process though.

    Hi all,

been great reading through this thread, very helpful :) Ive applied for C14, no date for IST yet though. One question, how essential is the driving license?

Im hopefully doing my practical driving test this summer, however, if worst comes to worst and I don't get it, should I say goodbye to any chance of getting in?

    cheers in advance :)

I didnt really lie as such, I just chose not to mention I had been to the IST before and failed. Whats important is this campaign not the ones where I didnt pass. I thought it would be irrelevant to bring it up, but then when I seen people were beginning to think the IST was easy i thought it would be a worth while post. :)

    Stephen,

    Welcome to the thread!

The holidays may have an effect but it’s unlikely. Here is what you can expect:

    Apply now;

    Initial Selection Test (April or May);

(you obviously need to pass this to move on to next stage)

    Assessment Centre (July or August)

I cant see the June holiday causing any problems as you wont be involved much in the process at this stage as consensia are likely to be still marking IST’s and what not?

If they do call you up for A/C they should give you a lot of notice so should it overlap with your holiday arrangements for this time you may be able to change dates. They are quite strict about this and may ask for travel tickets etc.

Im not 100% sure though if you can change dates with A/C but I know you van with the IST.

I’m finishing A-Level’s now and will be 18 at the time of my IST. I am declining university offers this year and I am going to take a year out to work and test my luck with C14. If I don’t get in this year im going to try again next year, the year after that and the year after that :D

In terms of the physical fitness it is a very rigorous couple of weeks from what I hear but nonetheless you have approx one year to get fit because provided you pass all the tests chances are you won’t start training until this time next year.

    Goodluck anyway ;)
    Ciaran

Thankyou so so much. that is some brilliant information. i will be sure to apply right now :P knowing that theres only 2 days left im goina get my skates on :D lol.

    Thanks Ciaran =]

hey, congrats on the merit number, very good.. id say you'll be grand with that one...

a little bit of advice, take down your actaul merit number and stick up a more general one(ie )..
your making it easy for anyone to identify you...(well anyone from recruitment)
    good luck with the medical...:D;)

Has anyone been in contact with recruitment recently. Is it ok now to phone them? I was thinking of asking them when they are likely to start sending out job offers for the May 25th campaign. Worried I might have more than 1 months notice to fulfill in my current job.:(

I rang recently and they were really pleasant and happy to help - give them a call......

Just seen your other post on last pg - so does that mean people who are going to be offered a place for may intake will have like 1-2 weeks left to be notified if they give 5/6 weeks notice?

Has anyone been offered May apart from those who deferred??

I was on phone to recruitment on thursday past. It's now just over 4 mths iv been waiting on my vetting to clear so this was the reason i rang. I asked was there a problem etc and they just said as i have had alot of military overseas addys then this is holding up the process. They were more than pleasant with info regarding this.
I am being vetted and med differntly to most of you guys/girls. I have to wait untill my vet completes before they offer me a med. Long story but thats whats happening.
Just want it all sorted before may .
    Heres hoping

thats a bit harsh colt19,goodcop is just an eager young applicant who has put his all into the process and i think that him leaving out the detail of him partaking in a previous campaign is irrelevant as he always tries to help and cooperate to the maximum of his ability to anyone who has a query.i feel he's a useful asset on such a thread.
