It's basic psychology! The wanting to be feared is based on a need to be in control. Classic schoolyard bullying behaveiour. If you can't control those around you, then you can't be in control of the events that affect your life.
(The small willy bit was more of an analogy)
Machiaveli proves the point, but the question must then be changed:

Nobody ever got their enemies to surrender out of love. jesus tried that and ended up nailed to a few bits of wood for his trouble.

If he'd continued with his da's old school fire and brimstone ways judas would be a footnote in history and jesus would be still around to turn water into funk.
