This has probably be posted before but I cant find

Three men arrive at a hotel and they want a room for the night. The woman at the desk tells them that the room is 30 euro so they all pay 10 euro each and then head upto the room. A few minutes later the womans notices that the room should have only cost 25 so she gives the porter 5 euro and tells him to bring it up to the lads. On the way up the porter decides that he will buy himself a bottle of water out of there money and not let on. So he spends 2 euro on the bottle of water and gives each of the men back one euro each. If each of the men get back one euro each that means they payed 9 euro each for the room which is 27 euro added to the 2 euro the porter stole is 29 euro. Where did the other euro go?

Last sentenced phrased weirdly? Shouldn't it be that they payed 27 for the room less the 2 euro for the water, equals 25 euro.

The men have one euro each that they got back, (3 X €1 = €3), the waiter has €2 (bought bottle of water), and the hotel has €25.

    25 + 3 + 2 = the original 30

    Alternatively:

The men did not pay €9 each for the room. They paid €8.33 each (€25 / 3) added to the €1 they god back, makes €9.33. So they paid 9.33 each for the room, NOT €9. The extra 33c each that they paid, adds up to the extra euro.

Yes *Angel*. They pay €9 each (€27) less the €2 for the water which is the €25. It's all in the misleading phrasing of the last sentence, which is incorrect.

I'd love to know how they pay €9 each - that's silly. 27 - 2 = 25 means nothing when they idea is to add up to 30.

the last sentence is phrased badly but this is not the answer, its just a cop out.

    27-2 = 25 makes sense.
    or
    30-3 = 27

Yes 27-2 = 25 makes sense - no disputing that.

But they did not pay €9 each.

And the question was trying to make up the €30.

    But 27 - 2 = 25 makes perfect sense.
