Phew, have just finished all 23 pages.
Between the recommendations here and on tripadvisor I am thinking either of these 2 hotels.
    http://www.cosmohotel.com/default.aspx?pg=location
    http://www.heraldsquarehotel.com/map.htm

The first one is on Tribeca, in lower manhattan and the seond one is very near the empire state building in midtown.

My question is which one would be the handiest location for getting round New York?
Afraid, i haven't stayed at either yet but I am staying at the first one (Cosmopolitan Hotel) in April. For the price im paying for 4 nights and the room im getting plus the (apparently) decent location plus the reviews on Tripadvisor, I reckon ive got a relative bargain *fingers crossed* :)

Firstly, Woodbury Common is a 45-60 minute bus ride from The Port Bus Authority and costs $39. Generally the shops here are more high end - Burberry, Chanel, Dior etc, there's a full list here.

Jersey Gardens is around 45 minutes from The Port Bus Authority and the bus ride costs $11. JG is probably more suited to younger people with shops like Abercrombie, Abercrombie and Fitch, Aeropostale, American Eagle Outfitters, see here.

I got a lot of stuff in both and made good savings (WC - Uggs for $170, Juicy Couture leather bag and jeans $130 each, JG - Guess jeans $50 a pair, hoodies $15).I had been to WC a couple of times before but it was my first time in JG. A couple of shops seemed to have closed in WC - Polo Ralph Lauren and I thought the selection in the RL shop was awful compared to previous years. A few of the shops were closed, but I was there in January so I suppose this was why. Personally, I preferred Jersey Gardens, but I would probably go to both again next time. There's a lot of fairly crap shops in JG, but there's plenty of good ones to make up for it. I thought the Tommy shop had a better selection than the one in WC and they had a separate kids store which was well stocked, but the prices were the same. In both outlets you can get a discount book, in WC you need to show your bus ticket (if you don't take the bus you can buy the book for $10 but it's probably not worth it, the coupons aren't that good), In JG you just need to show your driver's licence or passport.

I think both outlets are worth a visit but if you're caught on time and can only make it to one, look at the store listings in each and see which shops interest you more because it really depends on what you are looking for, I'd recommend Jersey Gardens while other people would recommend Woodbury Common...

Can anyone suggest a good store in New York or New Jersey for purchase of good laptop. Dell or other good brand.
Is there a difference between sales tax on PC's in NY and NJ.

Also on the lookout for stores where I might find Garmin Fish Finder.
    Any suggetions greatfully received.

    Thanks

I am going to NY at the end of march and I am wondering whats the best way to get to our hotel(Ramada New Yorker) from JFK airport.

    Thanks in advance...

When you get to JFK, get a taxi. It's always IMHO the best thing to do when you just get off the plane and arrive in a new country/city. It's a fixed price so you can't get ripped off and it just takes so much hassle out of trying to figure out local transport after a longhaul flight.

If you like you can have a minibus hired in advance that you'll share with others to take you into town. You'll save on some cash but considering the otherall cost of the trip it isn't really that much of a saving.

To get back you can either have the hotel book a shuttle for you (safe, cheapish option) or get public transport (I usually get the train from Penn station to Jamacia and then the airport AirTrain service for about $10). The taxi isn't fixed fare on the way back so not always a good option.

Although I do agree that taxis are the best way to get to your hotel after a long flight, as far as I can remember, your hotel is actually only around the corner from Penn Station so if you are visiting NY on a budget, you could easily take the air train to Jamaica and then the subway from Jamaica directly to Penn Station.

by far the cheapest way is via the subway which costs $2 but you have to pay $5 for the Airtrain  http://gonyc.about.com/cs/airlinesairports/a/getto_jfk.htm

a cab is the most convenient and best option if it is your first time to NYC, will cost about $50 though

Hi, will be travelling from NYC to boston. can anyone recommend a railway network to book with?

  • Banned (with Prison Access) Posts: 31,117 ✭✭✭✭snubbleste

Amtrak is the only one that plies that route, takes around 4 hours, check under their hot deals section or the web for online booking discounts

Alternatively, you can get the bus one-way from NY to Boston for $15, only takes 5 hours!

    Always try j&r also. http://www.jr.com/

B&H also do Mac gear and cheap memory for any Mac purchases you may buy while over there. Not too far on the subway from the Apple store but you could wait for ages in the shop, it is so busy.

I know the herald square is very near the shops, but I hear that the cosmo is near all the good restaurants and pubs. Are there shops in Tribeca as well?

    Thanks guys:):).

Either location is perfect (I can't vouch for the hotels themselves). All of Manhattan below the park is walkable. In fact we were staying at the lower tip and we went for a "stroll" the first evening and we were at Ground Zero in about 10 minutes.

We got the subway everywhere most of the time because we had the weekly ticket (also dirt cheap). We did walk home from the Park one afternoon and even lazy ole me didn't feel it.

So me and a few mates are heading to New york next week. We will be there for a week. Would like to watch the Ireland V England match in a Pub somewhere.

So first off it will be on around 10am i think NY time. Will there even be pubs open that early? And what are the chances of a pub showing the rugby live?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 30 gilga

    marge18,
depends how old you are (guessing 18) and how old you look. Having a USIT card that says 21/22 would be handy. It isn't too strict if you hit early, later on you may be carded at door (especially Manhattan). (I have never had the prob, been legal age, but know those who have)

    Dapos,
Yeah pubs will be open for it, open this week at 8:15 for the Wales game.
The Red Lion, Greenwich Village is a good spot. $20 to get in. Good mix of country support, so some craic between the nations. There are plenty of bars littered through city, so google for area you'll be in. Just make sure the pub has Setanta, some places say they will be showing it but commentary is in Italian/French, not what ya want.

    Hi,

So I am planning a trip to New York from Dublin this May. I would like to be there for around 7/8 days and I want the trip to be in and around the 2nd to the 10th of May but my dates are flexible.......

So far the cheapest flight I have found is €511 with all taxes fees etc included. Can people let me know how much they have paid to go? Also if you find something cheaper can you give me the details?

I would also like to find out what people thought of New York, the good things, bad things etc........

    Thanks in advance.

Pinkmonkey, have you read through this thread? There's 25 pages of good suggestions. As for flights, try Delta and Continental, they both fly from Ireland, Delta to JFK and Continental to Newark.

I did it years ago. Took about an hour. It's only ok, but for the sake of an hour, worth doing.
