Are messageboards like this still seen as 'nerdish'?

cough..........so anyway...........im not a nerd.....im from the cruel Northside of Dublin - I hate nerds.....but am I regarded as a 'nerd' for posting on any messageboards?..........strangely enough I think so. Although I do think that particular stigma is on the way out but it does hold some truth IMO. Most here are nerds - happy to criticise and be manly over the web but in real life.....would stand no chance if they were so up front with others standing right in front of them. Is there still the generalisation that those who use the internet and post on boards like this are glass wearing, weak, nerdy individuals or is it changing?

    Are you a Nerd?

Well given how popular non-nerdy forums (like after hours, soccer, television and motors) are, I'd say it's becoming less and less nerdish to be a member of boards as the days go by. People are becoming tech savvy so even the tech forums would be populated by people that wouldn't exactly be classified as nerds.

I wouldn't say people who use the internet are nerds. The likes of bebo, facebook, myspace and all the rest show otherwise, but I think boards will always be considered more nerdier than sites like bebo.

Aye, but the overall level of intelligence displayed on Boards is roughly 342 billion times than what is witnessed on Bebo.

It's becoming more acceptable to post on fora alright.

Am I a nerd? I certainly wouldn't consider myself as one, nor has anyone else previously.

    I am not a nerd.
Even when I first started over 10 years ago, I never thought of boards as nerdy, more that they were an outlet for a minority passion.

I didn't think I was a nerd until I saw that I had 242 posts last week alone! I, however, attribute that to boredom in work.

I don't think fora are really that nerdy to be honest. If you look at other soccer fora for example there are a lot of average Joe's and skangers who can barely string two words together posting. As already said, it's a sign of the world becoming more tech savvy.

Embrace your inner nerd people. Embrace it.

Then post the forums you frequent to prove that you are not a nerd.

    I am a nerd, I'll admit it.

Is it possible to be BOTH a skanger and a nerd at the same time? :)
What are the defining features of being a nerd again.:)
I thought it was to do primarily with obsessiveness of interests- isn't it, any interest i thought.
Or does tech-savviness have to be a pre-requisite.

Can't see how it'd be considered nerdish.

Interneting has become mainstream and isn't for the nerds as it were, to be stereotyped, a decade ago.

    Oh I'm a horrendous nerd.

Although I've been told I'm an unorthodox one given that I like sports and military stuff as well as being a compulsive reader and enjoy video games.

I think some degree of tech-savyness has to be a pre-requisite, altough perhaps not necessarily computer related, I guess other engineering or science disciplines would count aswell.

But if not then it's entirely possible for someone to be skanger and a nerd, all they need is an obsessive interest in injecting heroine into their veins and calling people 'bud' :)

I think its still nerdy to be an internet/messageboard addict, but its becoming cool to be a nerd.

More and more people are using technology and therefore 'discovering' the likes of boards...so everyone is becoming a nerd.

    If that makes sense.

Messageboards are nerdy. Anyone who is a user and thinks they're not is just fooling themselves.
Right enough, there are more users of messageboards now than ever before, so at some stage in the future, the nerds will be in the majority.

The stereotypical nerd is intelligent but socially and physically awkward. In film and television depictions, nerds are disproportionately white males with glasses and braces. It has been suggested by some, such as linguist Mary Bucholtz, that being a nerd may be a state of being "hyperwhite" and rejecting African-American culture and slang that "cool" white children use. However, after the introduction of the Steve Urkel character on the television series Family Matters, nerds have been seen in all races and colors. Further, the term and its use predate the popularity of African-American behavior mimickry in some whites, which did not really take off in significant levels until the early 1990's. Also, many popular whites haven't acted or dressed in an African-American style at all, such as the grunge trend, for example.

They typically appear either to lack confidence or to be indifferent or oblivious to the negative perceptions held of them by others, with the result that they become frequent objects of scorn, ridicule, bullying, and social isolation. Some nerds show a pronounced interest in subjects which others tend to find dull or complex and difficult to comprehend, or overly mature for their age, especially topics related to science, disambiguation, mathematics and technology. On the opposite end of the spectrum, nerds may show an interest in activities that are viewed by their peers as immature for their age, such as trading cards, comic books, or role playing games such as Dungeons & Dragons and other things relating to fantasy and science fiction. They are also stereotyped for being obsessed with Star Trek, Star Wars, and other science fiction shows or movies. Nerds are often portrayed as either obese or incredibly thin and nonathletic. Nerds are also portrayed as having symptoms of obsessive-compulsive disorder, such as by showing an extreme devotion to following classroom rules.

Stereotypical nerd qualities have evolved in recent years, from awkwardness and social ostracism to widespread acceptance and even celebration of their abilities. This is largely attributable to the rise of the internet, which has allowed many "nerdy" people (most notably Bill Gates) to accumulate large fortunes and other measures of social prestige. Some measure of nerdiness is widely considered desirable, because it suggests a person who is intelligent, respectful, interesting, and able to earn a large salary. This evolution has dovetailed with waning emphasis on the social awkwardness of nerds, with more attention placed on their intelligence and academic enthusiasm. Indeed, "nerd 2.0" has been used to refer to people who are intelligent and passionate about "nerdy" subjects, but are not necessarily socially or physically awkward.
    Rise of the Nerds!

Personally I always thought that using boards was more 'geeky' than 'nerdy'. Nerdy to me is spending excessive time studying academic subjects. Geeky is spending excessive time with technology, media etc.

If being a nerd requires some kind of intelligence, then no. Using Boards does not make you a nerd.

If being a nerd requires some kind of intelligence, certain corners of boards could be considered cures for the common nerd.

But what about your lesser spotted nerd?

Both versions of the plural are correct actually.
