they go all the way down to f1 Barry but generally f1.2 is more common. you would only be shooting f2.8 if you had to, always best to stay off wide open maybe got to f3.5 but if you have to shoot at f2.8 its there. I use a 50mm f1.4 and an 85mm f1.8 for indoor showjumping and shoot at 1/500th and depending on the venue you can be from ISO 800 to ISO 6400. If you shoot wide open it can be soft when you look at them on the computer.

cheers keith , i still have difficulty with the sigma 1.4 (30mm) , maybe ill try it not maxed completly !

I think it's important to know & love your subject.
Paul has shown some great examples of his rugby work & Borderfox has shown some of his brilliant equestrian work.
I'll shoot anything, but football is my first love.
I've spent years covering it for nothing & finally, I've begun to see some financial reward.
It means far more to get "that" shot though!

Seeing this on the wall of my Local, always puts a smile on my face...

    Says it all Peadar...

Barry, I think the point of really wide apertures is image quality and to achieve that you cant use them wide open but just a tad closed and if you have f1.4 then bring it to f1.8 and see the difference, when shooting sport I would prefer to go up in ISO than use a lens wide open, mind you where I shoot I run out of options really quickly.

I was at a Basketball match in the National Basketball Arena last week (It was my first visit despite living less than half a mile away) and it was very difficult as the action moved so quickly! Must have taken 200 pics in the half hour I was there.

Would anybody be interested in a Meet at a soccer match when the Eicom League starts, could get a small crew into Bohs if anyone was interested and there are 3 bars there!

Dodgykeeper, I don't see a single face in that Basketball shot, so it's a good example of what doesn't work. Seems to be a tough sport to cover, as I've never seen a good shot on Boards.

While I'd be glad to meet anyone before/after a game, I really don't think I'd have the capacity to chat to someone, while the game is in progress.
Paulw & I meet for the rugby, but we barely speak during the games, because it takes so much concentration to cover the action.

I'll cover at least one eLoI game a week, particularly Cork Cith FC games in the greater Dublin area, so if any of you see me, don't be afraid to introduce yourself.

Yeah I wouldn't mind going along but my 200mm wouldn't be great for the access you get on those grounds.

Nice shot of yours in the Gazette this week. :D

Yeah, I'd be interested in that, just for comparison, of course. :D Just give me a few days notice.

And I thought you just didn't like talking to me. Ok, just teasing.

Yeah, there's seldom time to talk during a game. It's a case of keeping focused on what's happening. Quick chats before the game, half time, and then at the end are about it.

But, I'd certainly be interested in a boards sports event shoot.

If anyone is interested in getting a hurling game in this weekend, Dublin are playing Clare in a challenge match this Sunday at 2.30pm in St Brigids out in Castleknock. I doubt there will be a massive crowd so plenty of sideline access.

I'd definitely be on for that, if you haven't got too many already.

Also a friend of mine works for Sportsfile and maybe could answer any questions you may have after the game, Will look at fixtures and get back to you all when the season starts.

Thanks for the thread Paulw.Inspired by it I decided to bring my camera to the Irish match, just to shoot the warm up from my seat.I was using the 28-135mm at 1/400th,ISO 400 and F 5.6 so the results didn't really come out as planned but here they are anyway.

For most sports events, a 70-200mm f/2.8 lens (Canon, Nikon, Oly, Sigma) is what you really want.

For those serious, the 70-200mm f/2.8 lens is a must.

on these lens , can you shoot at f 2.8 , at 200 mm ??

    ps.nice last shot inibaz

Hi Paul , great site, I was at most of the Leinster matches and you have captured the games excellently.
I am a hobbyist photgrapher and I am looking for a change of career and was wondering would you have any advise.
I have a small pentax digital the s6, which is great for the hobbyist but I am looking on doing some courses in digital photography and I would like to start from the beginning and hopefully lead on to sports photography .
would you know of any courses in Dublin which you would reccomend where I could do it part time eves.
Thanks for any advise in advance.:D

    Welcome to boards.

    Thanks for the comments.

Ok, let me say this, I'm a hobby photographer, for the most part. I'm not a full-time pro photographer. My real day job pays too good, so photography is my hobby.

I would have no advice for anyone turning pro, except that it is not to be taken lightly.

I'm not one for plugging, but DigitalBeginners do some digital photography training courses. Supposed to be very good. They don't yet have a sports course, but I believe they are investigating it.

Anyway, I hope that is of some small help to you. Feel free to PM for any more info.

    Some nice shots Paul.

Anyone interested in going to the Dublin vs Monaghan NFL game on March 15th?

It will be around 7 or 7.30 in Parnell Pk.

It should be a good game as well with Monaghan playing well at present.
