Hi folks, just checked re the driving licence question. You cant do a PSNI driving course without having passed the test in the 'civilian' world first. Hope this helps.

can't believe people actually thought that you could do that course without already having a licence :D

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭justaquestion

does that mean i have to get my test.

what are those who dont have license supposed to do when others are driving.

    guys
just looking at pack about training
    noticed something

it says "police trainees shall be paid monthly in arrears, or at such other intervals as the chief constable may fix"

can someone explain this so i dont panic. i really cannot afford to be paid nothing from psni at end of march

    Justaquestion,

It doesn’t mean you have to get your test but I’d advise it. I believe anyone who holds a full UK license and joins the PSNI is eligible to do both the basic and response driving courses. As far as I know the basic allows you to drive pool vehicles for general duties etc but without lights/horns. IE it’s to get you’re driving to a good general standard and I doubt they’d allow this to happen with R Plates. I think the response driving is the advanced element where they teach the system of vehicle control, road craft etc. IE all the good stuff with lights etc :D

The way I would look at it is this, the longer you don’t have a driving license the longer you’ll be with fewer skills than your colleagues. Who knows maybe it’s a good thing but I doubt it.

Don’t worry yourself, your in just plan to get it when you can!

in relation to arrears, don’t worry about it. All that means is you’ll be paid at the end of the month for anything you have worked to that point. Some companies pay a mix of in advanced and in arrears, often those paid in the middle of the month. I’m still surprised that there is not a cut off point mid way through the month but PSNI has confirmed that they pay right up to the end of the month for whatever you have worked.

    Martin.

    Justaquestion,

Did you confirm how you’re currently paid? It’s going to work out very well for me in my situation so you could be similar?

I’m paid at the end of the month for anything time worked up until the 15th of the month. Overtime is paid a month in arrears of this.

What this means for me is a full pay from my current employer at the end of March and whatever the PSNI pay me. I’ll also get another pay at the end of April from my current employer with 5 days holiday pay and a little overtime.

It may not be as bad as you think!

Don’t panic, can family help if you’re short? Are you a member of a credit union that you can get quick access to money? Have you any access to a credit card with a 0% on transfers just in case?

    Martin.

Hey guys, this whole process has me stressed out, I’m bit like greengloves in the whole degree thing! Been looking on here for a wee while, got some really useful info. Wondered can anyone who has got into the march intake tell me how long after their medical they got the phone call? I know I have a place if I pass medical, just wondered how long it took to get confirmation.

Hi folks, You CAN participate on a Standard driving course if you are still in 'R' plates but you are exempt from having to display them on police vehicles. The standard course is 3 weeks and includes response driving, the system of car control and Higway code / Roadcraft. If you dont pass the response section then you will have to return for a further 1 week course.

Oh, apparently you have to pass your 2 week firearms course prior to proceeding automatically onto the driving course.

On another note, if your bank account details are processed asap once you are in Garnerville, then you will get paid for the 2 weeks work in March.

What do you do if you are not driving? Bit of a tongue in cheek response, but, "sit in the passenger seat" is always an option.

Hope this is of some assistance.;)

    Hello and welcome!

You won’t get a call to confirm you passed the medical, you’ll get a call only to offer you a place on a particular intake. If this is one of the later intakes you could be waiting some time.

A better idea would be to ring recruitment and ask if you have passed the medical as they’ll tell you over the phone.

Ethan, are you sure that’ll be you? I’m considering going for a one all over but like Samson I’m nothing without hair :D

    Haha that is madness.

You could be driving on response call's as an advanced driver but on the way home from work have to put up your R platers and stick to 45 on the Motorway etc.

    Loving it :)

Martin, you'll not be on response as an 'advanced' driver. Thats a separate intense 3 week course by selection / approval only. And you would have your 'R's displayed normally on your own car at all times just like everyone else.

    Cheers.:)

    Flip,

    It was my understanding that the basic course included;

    Stage 1 basic driving.
    Stage 2 response driving.
    ?

In my opinion anyone who is familiar with the system of vehicle control and road craft who can attend emergency/urgent calls is an advanced driver by public standards?

I realise that there are 2 further stages of driving in the police but surely even the first 2 would put someone well above the standard of an average R plater?

As such I think it’s madness that someone could be trusted with an advanced level of driving in work yet have to use R plates driving home from work

    Maybe it’s just me :P

Cheers for the clarification on the R plate issue though.

    Martin.

It boils down to anyones personal interpretation of 'advanced' level in the public domain as compared to 'Standard' level required to comply with ACPO Standards required by a Police driver.
Also, think about it, if you have just recently passed your test, you should have not developed any bad habits yet, allowing a natural progression as compared to an 'aul hand' who knows every trick in the book and requires a lot of correction?
SWINGS AND ROUNDABOUTS comes to mind.:)

Very true, never thought of it that way.

I for one can say my driving was terrible as an R driver. 17 years old, drove to fast, thought I was the best driver in the world etc.
It's true that you learn to drive after you pass your test so why not learn to drive the right way.

You have to admit though, it is a little funny having to put R plates up in your own car when 15 minutes before you could have been on a response call? Maybe they should waive the R plate status of those in this situation due to the additional training they have undertaken? Why do they not have to put R plates up while attending court in a pool car? Because it would look stupid? :D

    Martin.

Insurance comes into play with this issue too. Down to what exemptions and policies dictate.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 66 ✭✭justaquestion

matth1983, i personally doubt youd be able to get leave during training for something like that. i think theyre pretty strict on what theyll allow, funerals etc

justaquestion is right, they are very strict about special leave, althought they do take everyone on a case-by-case basis, so in your example, I really don't know! You'd have to talk to one of the foundation inspectors about it.
