turn external HDD into NAS

Is there a way to turn an ordinaly external HDD into a NAS device? I have a 500GB external disk that is linked to my main PC. I would like to turn it into a NAS device rather than sharing it via windows. Is there any inexpensive piece of kit that will allow me do this?

Something like this would do the trick with the added bonus of converting your USB printer into a network printer aswell.
